The perception is probably because out of the game advertise for either next gen console the list is small and not appealing to a lot of people. The thing is, no one really puts down over 400 bones to play smaller gamers which is where the difference is. Those smaller games are like sprinkles on a desert. Nice to have but not needed.

and I totally get that people could prioritize larger games like that I mean I'm more of a AAA guy myself, but I don't get why PS4 gets that moniker when it has released just as many AAA games as the competition in the first year if not more. I mean they've pretty much traded blows on exclusives so far if you eliminate remasters

I believe both consoles are considered as being light when it comes to retail games. For the knowledged gamer, its has always been clear the PS4 has great support on the digitial end. The thing is most of those digital games are not lighting the fire for gamers who have either already played those games or only see them as brief distractions.
When all is said and done, gamers really do not care about which system has the most games, they only care about which system has the most games they care about.
