The release of a console is hardly an 'arbitrary line'.

It's not arbitrary in the sense of giving them a concrete line, sure, but its narrative dependant. Depending the company, the line could be drawn all over the place hence the statement of "arbitrary", and all of those lines would be valid. If anything, it would be more fair to actually draw the line at half-year or three months (post release) (which are perfectly valid sequential dates for hardware statistics), this is a definitive line just the same as the launch is a definitive line but my choice in picking it depends on what narrative I want to build around the line I have drawn.

If I say three-month post, I'd entirely cut out the PS4's biased launch data and the % would entirely change.

But then you're picking an entirely arbitrary line to "even things out" and "be fair".

That would be no more realistic or factual than saying "lets include sales priors prior to mario kart 8 only".

The problem is simply this, the numbers are low as hell anyway, even if you cut the PS4 sales data in half you still end up with a heavy marketshare in sony's favor anyway, simply because the PS3 still sells so strong.

Of course, that's why I said the line is arbitrary, and depends on the narrative I'm aiming to build.

We're currently spinning the data however we see fit, Sony did the same. I'm pretty sure we are agreeing on everything short of the word for this called "spin".

The only deceptive PR I see so far no offence is that article that is clearly written by someone who jumped to conclusions and didn't actually listen to the show.

All Hail the Jester King. The King is back, and I am still a dirty girl prof ;)

Obviously it was a PR spin, that's just Sony being Sony though lol

Not only is player essence a crappy website, but this is not a spin of any kind, its just PR.

Disappointing again, using numbers to show a false picture of the reality in Japan.

The reality in Japan is that home console video gaming is on the way out, with handhelds dominating the scene. In the handheld market, Nintendo is the obvious winner. Sony is not doing well in Japan, and that is a fact. No 78% bs number will change that reality.

I also dislike many of the "U angry?" "You salty." type posts in this thread. People just can't accept criticism without getting personal  (FATALITY, pokoko, Zackasaurus-rex, bubblegamer, pokoko). I am not surprised, I'm just upset I couldn't ban you all.

Everything you just said has nothing to do with the topic at hand.  It was just people thinking the 78% market share for home consoles was a lie when it's true for 2014. I have no idea why you're taking it so personally and attacking other users by wishing you could ban them.

So me saying that the 78% number is meaningless in japan has nothing to do with the topic at hand?

You're funny.

Let me be clear. I agree with OP that the numbers presented by Sony to show their market presence in Japan are disingenuous.

Do not call out users, I believe that's bannable.

Also while this is PR, its not neccesarily spin or false, considering the context was for this year.

YTD: Wii U vs PS4 is 30 to 70 so with the PS3 still selling and included its 78%.

And its only natural to want to make numbers look good for your company.

Don't you remember this?

Mario Kart 8 Increases Wii U Sales by 600 Percent in the UK

Surely its hypocritical to demonize Sony for making a PR claim when literally everyone else does it.

If it's bannable I don't agree with the rules. People are misbehaving in this thread and being aggressive, they should be highlighted in my opinion.

Listing users you wish you could ban somehow isn't being aggressive?

About the 600% in UK, that's a number in UK and is a very important number. UK was a struggling region for the U. It's not the same thing here at all, Sony is trying to show that their presence in Japan is still strong. I don't think their numbers are valid in supporting that.

So it's okay if Nintendo want to show their strength in the UK, but if Sony does the same thing for Japan it's not okay?

WiiU sold in Japan during 2014 - 314,468
Wii sold in Japan during 2014 - 5332
PS4 sold in Japan during 2014 - 670,811
PS3 sold in Japan during 2014 - 308,308
360 sold in Japan during 2014 - 6808

For 2014, looks pretty strong to me - Even if you cut the PS4 number in half to remove the "launch bubble" theyre still way ahead of the competition in marketshare.

Both are using limited scope to give the best possible outlook, both are just as guilty as the other, excusing one while bashing the other shows nothing but bias.

And the PS4 isn't struggling in Japan compared to the rest of the world? Why wouldn't Sony try to show their presence is strong in Japan in a Japanese Show?

Why would they say anything that puts their product in a bad light, especially when they are getting destroyed in handheld sales, and their next gen home console has yet to catch up to the Wii U? Wouldn't it be much worse to give up on Japan entirely?

This is the very definition of PR, to control the release of information. They'll only say home consoles, because that is pretty much the only area they are winning in for Japan right now.
