Conegamer said: I'm somewhat concerned that, if this thread is like this on a regular week like this...then what will happen on, say, Destiny week? Worrying stuff. "Salt" comments aren't helping the situation either you know. Let's tone them down to zero from this point, please. |
I think this just happened to be a week where some pent up frustrastion on the part of some Xbox fans burst out in a flaming ball of vitriolic hate towards anyone or anything associated with PS4. This has been a good 8 months in the making, with disappointment following hope time and time again since the beginning of the year. It'll probably take a while for the pressure to build up again so I think September will probably be a relatively calm month.
This is also not really a regular week. While PS4 was nominally at 9.4 million on Zee Chartz Xbox fans could live in a bit of denial. And then with adjustments we suddently see the true magnitude of the sales gap (and if Sony is actually right about 10 milion as of 9-ish August the gap is larger still), plus Wii U get a bump to almost 7 million, and for the first time in quite a while, TLOU launch week bump aside, the numbers published on the front page show PS4 at almost 100K above Xb one. If you look at the sales history now, after adjustments, you'll se plenty of weeks where the gap is close to or above 100K. But at the time the gaps were not that big. On average the adjustments for PS4 must be in the region of about 22K up from originally reported, if we benchmark VGCs 5 million week for PS4 roughtly coinciding with Sony's 5 million announcement.
So to all outward appearances this seems like a regular week, but actually from the perspective of Xb one's sales relative to PS4 there are several hits to the morale of Xb one; if Xb one was a person with feelings. So therefore actual people with feelings who project their feelings onto a console will feel those hits to morale and some of those people will lash out because that's just how some people are wired.
I also think there is an element of dread about the future creeping in. The longer Xb one languishes, and ythe more that things MS tries fails to really improve things in a sustained way, the more people become really concerned that Xb one will not merely fail relatie to PS4, but it will actually fail. It is an inbteresting contrast to how PS3 was failing early in its life. I recall that PS3 fans, to a very annoying degree, maintained that PS3 would become dominant eventually. The arrogance was so strong, and seemingly so deluded because all signs (and analysts) pointed towards abject failure for PS3. Who remembers the "Playstation is the future now believe" slogan that so many PS fans had in their sig back in 2008/9 (before $299 slim). How could PS be the future when it was selling at embarassingly low levels, and Sony was in the financial pooh?
Of course there was reason behind the apparent madness and in hindsight an objective assessment of the 2007/8 situation for PS3 shows that PS3 was destined for bigger and better things. And two reasons for having confidence in the long term prospects of PS3 were PS1 and PS2. Xbox one doesn't have that pedigree to instill the sort of insane confidence that PS3 fans displayed in the early years. Not least because while PS3 has sold just over 50% of PS2 (meaning a huge gen on gen loss) the fact that PS2 sales were so huge means a 50% reduction still counts as among the highest console sales of all time. If Xb one is going to suffer a 3rd generation curse like PS3 did then possibly the best Xbox fans can hope for is around 50% of Xbox 360 sales, and that is only if there is something which puts a bit of ginger into the Xbox brand.
I think there is genuine trepidation that if PS4 momentum isn't checked very soon, then MS is going to have a very rough generation.
So, some or all of these factors have been worming their way into some people's minds, possibly without conscious awareness, and this lashing out is the result.
