Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Amiibo will not be the next Skylander, it will be the next Wii Mote.

How big will Amiibo get?

Bigger than Disney Infinity 28 12.96%

Bigger than Skylanders 14 6.48%

Bigger than both! 78 36.11%

As big as the Wii (100's... 15 6.94%

It will flop harder than windows 2000. 50 23.15%

I would like a cheeseburg... 30 13.89%

Total:215

Disney infinity seems like the best out of the 3.

Skylanders was the first, so they got the head start, but the characters aren't well known.

Amiibos (why the fuck does Nintendo insist on awful product names) have much much more recognizable characters, but they don't have a singular game they go with. What I'm trying to say is that I don't really understand what they do. They seem more like a collectible/accessory than something you need to play a game.

Infinity has a single game that you buy the cahracters for (like skylanders) while also having massively recognizable brand characters (even more so than Ninentdo)

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

It's not going to do well. Not as bad as some of the exclusives on the platform, but not well enough to be called good.

This is an opinion thread. I have no facts to base it up, just a gut feeling. I genuinally believe that the argument that Amiibo's will be as impactful as Skylander is very limited in sight. I have multiple reasons why:

1. People compare Amiibo to Skylander and Infinity, both of which have toys for ONE game or game series. Nintendo's toys will be working with a MULTITUDE of games coming out 2014 and 2015 and probably a whole lot more that haven't even been announced yet (Animal Crossing U, Pokemon U, Pokken, etc). It will be HUGE compared to Skyfinity based on this single feat alone.

2. People will recognize Nintendo toys for years and decades more than they will Skyfinity toys (depending on the toy). Old people will recognize them and want to buy their grand kids something that they KNOW isn't offensive or violent (they don't know the same thing about Skylander and, for the most part, Disney Infinity). Middle age people will remember playing with these characters from their own youth and will feel nostalgic and want their kids to experience what they did if they haven't already (also these middle aged people may still be gamers and want to collect these toys themself). I'm 23 years old and can't wait to collect these toys and play the games they are compatible with and I'm thinking there are at least a decent amount or 20 or 30 somethings out there who feel the same way. Lastly the kids will see these toys and, because of Skylander toys and how cool they are as well as their identification of iconic characters, desire them.

3. They are FAR more advanced in capabilities and in future prospect than Skyfinity toys.

4. It will work with both Wii U and 3ds (at least in some capacity on the 3ds).

5. Like the Wii mote, which did not invent motion controls but rather make it a global hit, I think people will look at amiibo and realize this is the beginning of the perfection of something massive and they will want to buy it and experience it.

I definitely disagree.   First of all, they arent really designed to work for a multitude of games.  Sure, there is limited universal support, but games will have deciated lines of amiibos and if you dont use the correct amiibo with the right game, a lot of the amiibo features for that game will not be available.  Also, they are definitely not anymore functional than skylanders or disney infinity.  It is the exact same technology...

Secondly, while nintendo characters may be more recognizable than skylander characters, they definitely arent as recognizable as the disney infinity characters.  Nostalgia or interest in those character didnt seem to increase sales of those figures at all.  Also, these things are just statues. You cant really play with with them...  Nintendo character statues and toys have been around for ages, but they arent really high demand.

Thirdly, ammibos are just game bots.  You cant even play with your ammibo character.  It is just a glorified pet trainer.  Nothing very exciting at all about it.  Their may be some use for pokemon, but nintendo doesnt seem all that interested in integrating it with pokemon at the moment.

All in all, amiibo looks pretty boring and uninteresting to me and I expect most people once they learn all the details.  There is a reason nintendo hid all the facts about amiibos in a seperate video when they revealed them.

It will flop because there is no "amiibo game". It only unlocks tiny extra stuff for some games. It could've done well if there was an "amiibo game" (like there is with skylanders and DI).

They'll do what they're meant to do, add a new revenue stream for Nintendo at the low end to help them shore up Wii U financials. Anything more is beyond their intentions, i would think.

The Wii Remotes were not "perfection" of anything, and in fact were just waggle controls. They all had to be replaced once Wii Motion+ came out with actual motion controls.

The only form of amiibo that would work perfect is to integrate them into the Pokemon TCG cards. And let us use the physical cards for a online game.

How do Amiibo's actually interact with the games anyway? what point do they have?

Do you need the Amiibo figure to use the equivalent character in the game? because if you don't actually need the figure why bother buying them?

I mean look at Skylander's if you bought a figure for the first game that figure was usable on any version regardless if it was Wii, PC or PS3/360.

That figure is also usable on every new game so a figure bought in 2011 for Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure will also be usable on 2014's Skylanders: Trap Team that's pretty good value.

They will generate huge profits for nintendo, i am sure of it. Like, 400 million, 500 million, something like that. a part of me is actually considering 1 billion in profits from Amiibo alone.

Also, sony will try to copy in early 2016 or sooner. MS would too, but they do not have enough characters. Actually, they could do it with rare characters, halo, allan wake...
