Forums - Gaming - "The Wii U is a better secondary console than the X1/PS4"

Simple. There is far less SW overlap if a PS4 owner buys a Wii U, as opposed to a One. There's also the fact that because of the sales gap, a lot of 3rd party exclusives that are on the One will eventually be making their way to the PS4, eventually. Of course, Nintendo also has great 1st party exclusives you can't really find a counterpart for elsewhere, like Mario and Zelda.

This is one of the reasons I think that Nintendo, if they play their cards right, can keep 2nd. I know I, and a few other people I know, plan on getting a Wii U when it hits $199.

I think the reason this is said is because Nintendo exclusives tend to be more unique, and consist of a lot of genre exclusives that don't exist in abundance on the other platforms (despite the common forumer assertion, Nintendo exclusives are more varied than Mario and Zelda ;) ). So a gamer with a PS4/Wii U or a One/Wii U would have a larger variety of genres to call upon than another gamer with a PS4/One.

That being said, realistically not everyone is interested in playing a wide variety of genres, instead preferring to double down on their preferred types of games. Gaming forums tend to be a made up of serious gaming hobbyists, which is why people tend to prefer a "buffet style" of gaming over two courses of the same dish. Nothing wrong with either preference, but it's easy to see why someone who plays 30+ hours of games a week would lean with a more varied option.

For me personally, I opted for a Wii/PS3 last generation, as my preferred genre (JRPG), had a wide selection of exclusives on the latter system, though Wii U/3DS and my last-gen backlog are keeping me too busy to look at either of the other consoles this gen. Of course, I barely play 10 hours a week now, so this opinion likely isn't too common.

exactly why i bought WiiU instead of Xbone.  I mean I'll get all the 3rd parties and Sony first party on PS4 and Nintendo exclusives too.  That takes care of all the games I could want this gen minus 1 or 2 probably

Get Your Portable ID!Lord of Ratchet and Clank

Duke of Playstation Plus

Warden of Platformers

It makes a good secondary console only if Nintendo exclusives interest you. If not then the XB1 would make a better secondary console since it will have exclusives you can't get on the PS4 that are aimed for the core player.

Probably because of the significant overlap in software among PC, Xbox, and Playstation, whereas WiiU has a lot of software that can't be played anywhere else.

End thread.

It isn't rocket science

This here is what everyone making a case for the wiiU would say. Its not actually true though.

If in truth the PS4/XB1 has a library made up of 95% of similar games. The other unfortunate truth is that the 5% of exclusive/different games they have would be more than or equal to the library of WiiU exclusive games.

People say that you get the WiiU for its exclusives. But the other consoles have exclusives too. At the end of the day any console investment should be made on the number of games you can play on that platform that appeals to you. Having said that and being a PS4 owner; before/if I get a second console i will simply look at the exclusive games that the console has and how many of them their are. I will admit that I am leaning towards a WiiU now, but thats cause I have always been a Zelda fan. If I was a Halo fan I would be leaning towards the XB1.

How do you figure when the WiiU gets next to no multiplats, that makes nearly its entire library exclusive. You think that 5% that is exclusive to either X1 or PS4 will outnumber nearly the entirety of the Wii U library?

Unfortunately, Nintendo has turned into the side girlfriend. You don't get serious with her, but she's always fun when you hang out.

Why......why would it make more sense in the future and less sense now?

WiiU already has a good library of games, where PS4 and XB1 are still building one. Buying a WiiU as either a primary/secondary console now makes the most sense because you actually have something to play while you wait for PS4/XB1 to get some games.

In the long term, as a secondary console WiiU will probably still be the better choice since almost all of the highly rated games will be exclusive, but right now makes the most sense.

------

e.g. The first worthwhile game to own a PS4/XB1 for (which isn't available on PS3/360) is probably Batman Arkham Knight, or maybe The Order:1886. These games aren't even out yet. Meanwhile on WiiU there are already half a dozen 9/10 games of all genres (Racing - Mario Kart, Platformer - DKC & Mario, Action/Miscellaneous - Pikmin 3/W101/Hyrule Warriors/Bayonetta 2, etc)

You pretty much explained yourself why the choice of an X1 or PS4 as a secondary system will make more sense in the future, the games will be there in 4-5 years, every system will have build a respectable library of exclusive titles (or titles you can't play on the other 2 systems) that is probably comparable in size.

I added the 4-5 years part to avoid comments like yours, I don't care about what makes more sense right now, the majority of the market hasn't even bought their first next gen system, so they won't really think about what their secondary system will be.

Also regarding the bolded, that is you assuming that the Wii U will have more worthwile exclusive at the end of the gen, which I quite frankly do not see that way.

XB1/PS4 will have games in 4-5 years, but WiiU won't? Nintendo announced as many exclusive games for WiiU as there were announced for XB1/PS4 combined. Where's the logic in that? If Nintendo has the most now, and is announcing the most for the future, logic dictates that it will have the most in the end.

Regarding the bolded, how can you say this? If you go to metacritic you will clearly see that Wii had the most high rated exclusives of the generation. Below I made a table excluding remakes, collections, and HD ports of game from other gens (e.g. Call of Duty 2).

Score Wii PS3 360
90+ 8 8 8
85+ 16 17 14
80+ 32 27 23

Every system will have a respectable library of exclusives? Yes and no. Look at the 360, if you didn't like either Halo, Gears or Forza, you loose a huge chunk of the exclusive library. Meanwhile Nintendo and Sony have about 20 different IP's (i.e. you can love your WiiU without Zelda, PS3 without Uncharted).

----

So WiiU is still a better secondary console then the XB1/PS4. Not only will it likely have the most highly rated games, but for $100 less with free online (for the small library of online games) it's a bargin as well.

However I will admit that PS4 would make a good alternative to PS4, but not for the reasons you mention. PS4 is more known for JRPG's/Action games where XB is mostly shooters. For an XB1 fan to appreciate a PS4, he'd need a wide interest in genre's, and if he has that wide interest, then a WiiU would still likely make for a better option.

To own more then 1 console, you need overlapping interests in genres or be willing to spend a lot for few games. A PS4, with mostly Action/Adventure & JRPG exclusives won't be of huge interest to an XB1 fan who is mostly interested in shooters. However PS4 does have some shooter exclusives, so if they mean that much.....same logic applies for all consoles.

XB1 - Shooter/Racing
PS4 - Mixed bag, mostly Action/Adventure & JRPG
WiiU - Platformer/JRPG/Miscellaneous
