Bigger tragedy

Xbox one reveal Fail 103 81.75%

PSN Outage Fail 23 18.25%

Total:126

PSN outage Doom caused playstation console sales to fall especially in a year super important to sony, with 2011 homing the releases of uncharted, littlebigplanet, infamous etc.
It affected software sales, with many saying socom 4 sales were affected by it, thus putting zipper interactives future at doubt and resting solely on a vita game, unit-13, which caused them to close.
It lost consumers trust with many refusing to use their debit cards on psn due to apparent stealing of data. As well as the lack of online gaming for a month.

Xbox one reveal was probably the most unorganised shambled mess in gamings history. You have one employee telling you always online is the future. He gets fired (see adam orth) xbox one revealed 2 months after ps4, shows hardly any games at launch event, shrouded by drm, always online, always plugged in kinect. I remember Microsoft were found to be allowing government access to skype conversations and stuff (Don't worry they've stopped that now) Then there was the game sharing confusion, on which sony delivered a dramatic blow in the head with all the 'you can game share' as well as the apparent lack of indie support.
Then your divisions leader saying if you dont have connectivity then you should buy a 360, then major nelson saying you cant just flip a switch to turn drm off, then turning drm off 2 days after interview.
Then completely mixed messages where they are now saying 'you can share games' and 'you dont have to connect online or connect kinect' It was all very confusing and misinformed.

(Editors note: I would just like to add that major nelson lied in an interview where he said xbox one would let you have virtually unlimited friends. The limit turned out to be 1000 friends on xbox one. Well if that is virtually unlimited, bite my bottom because ps4's friend limit is 2000)

Definitely the X1 reveal. I've never seen a bigger backlash.

1/ none of them were tragedies

if it has a happy ending it's a tragi-comedy

2/ "major nelson lied in an interview where he said xbox one would let you have virtually unlimited friends"

Major Nelson never lies, when he uses the word "friends" it's not a marketing stunt

I would say x1 reveal cause even though the psn outage was a big facepalm and it had its own share of big issues but the fact that MS had the nerve to treat their consumers like such idiots really pissed me off. The fact that they could even think of such an idiotic idea of always online drm with a mandatory once every 24 hours check just blew my mind. On top of that, Don Matrick had the nerve to say that if you wanted an offline console, go buy a 360...

Like, this is the start of the next generation, a fresh start for all consoles and this is how they are treating people? They even lied through their teeth and said, oh, we can't just flick a switch and turn it off and guess what, they did just that! Heck, during the reveal, all you could hear was just TV TV TV TV TV, KINECT KINECT KINECT TV TV TV and other nonsense. Some people call it ambitious, I call it miss reading the market by a mile so yes, I do think the x1 reveal was far worse than psn outage doom even though that was pretty lolz

Was a tragedy for the companies. Lost potential sales as well as harming their current install base and surely lost customers.

the truth.   this isn't even a question because the results speak for themselves.  sony survived getting hacked fairly unscathed.  oh sure it sucked and it had a lot of bad press but no one really blamed sony for falling prey to hackers in a world where another hacker story pops up every few months.

the xbox reveal,.. that was entirely microsoft.  no one to scape goat to and the massive impact at market is undeniable.   ms didn't just shoot themselves in the foot,. they crippled themselves for probably this entire generation.   ..and who knows, might still ripple into the next.

PS got over it

X1 is still feeling the effects of the botched reveal

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

XOne reveal for sure. It will probably be talked about in marketing classes for decades to come as a lesson how not to reveal your product.

The Xbox One reveal. First, they show the console in a reveal conference amidst some nasty DRM rumors that caused a social media outburst. Then, the conference itself showed too much of stuff gamers didn't care. A week after that, they released a document to inform gamers how would the Xbox One would work with the DRM. To top it off, they revealed that the console was $499 at E3, while Mattrick said to every member of the media that if someone didn't have internet, they should stick to a Xbox 360.
