Forums - Gaming - Digital Foundry: Metro Redux (PS4 1080p, Xbone 912p)

"We compared the new editions to the original console versions, noting some remarkable differences - not least the impressive boosts to both physical and temporal resolution. Xbox One renders at 912p vs the PS4's 1080p, but it was the frame-rate lock to 60fps that really caught the eye."

"We see adaptive v-sync kick in twice during our test session, resulting in a minute amount of fleeting tearing at the very top of the screen - essentially invisible then, tucked into the overscan on most displays. To all intents and purposes, this is a locked 60 frames per second."

"Raw mathematics would suggest that the increase in image quality on PS4 is pronounced, but in actual fact, both versions resolve detail extremely well - as the zoomer shots below demonstrate. A couple of image quality factors do separate the two games - outdoor foliage quality (it's cleaner and crisper on PS4) but more importantly temporal instability."

"In the case of Metro Redux, both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions look extremely similar, with just the level of post-process AA pixel crawl separating them."

"Away from the rendering specifics, one platform-exclusive feature we do rather like is 4A's utilisation of the Dual Shock 4's light bar."

"Overall, we're rather impressed with 4A's work here. Genuine effort has gone into bringing these two games up to scratch for the new wave of consoles, and the 60fps performance level is a game-changer if you've only played these titles previously on last-gen hardware. We look forward to stacking up the Redux PC versions with the console editions and checking out the technical improvements made there - it should be an interesting exercise in comparing image quality boosts with the impact to performance high-end rendering inevitably has."

It's locked at 60, that's the most important. But, not to start something here, didn't the developer say both version were 1080p?

Can't remember but as PS4 is 50% more powerful as repeated a million times how could both versions run the same?

Unfortunate...but not the biggest gap we've seen.

I'll be playing the PC version either way because of the discount for original Metro owners.

Might have been my imagination. Oh well, I don't wanna dicuss the power difference between the systems, sorry.

There is nothing to discuss - it was done so many times here, I guess nobody wants a repition of that.

Good for both consoles. I really don't think the performance differences are worthy of any kinda hassle as long as both versions run well. Its simple math, the PS4 is more powerful on so many different level so it should naturally run and look better. I don't think how much worse the XB1 version looks will/should be enough to completely detract from its version of a game; and only when it does.. or somehow runs better than the PS4 version should it become worthy of discussion.

The way I see it, all things being equal the PS4 version should run and look better in any multiplatform game, if both games run and look identical, then it means the PS4 version was gimped because there is no reason that should ever be the case. If the XB1 version comes out better than the PS4's, then its a conspiracy lol.

I think 900p to the PS4s 1080p is a acceptable standard that the XB1 should be ok with. And everyone else for that matter unless they are anal (PS4 fans) or delusional (XB1 fans)

While, I do somewhat agree with what you said before this sentence. I do not agree with this. No, a 900p framerate to a 1080p framerate is not acceptible if one is paying the same money for both consoles. It would be acceptble if it were 100-150 dollars less than the ps4.

This! If it performs less, it should cost less money... Simple math.

That is how multiplatforms should be handled.

Optimizing the game for the stronger platform and reducing the resolution on the weaker until you have the same performance.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
