Ocarina of Time, Halo, Goldeneye, Final Fantasy VII, etc. etc. transcended games and became phenomenons. The Last of Us isn't even close. Uncharted 2 is closer.

The Last of Us could be top 50, but 1? No way. By the way before you say I am biased I am a Sega fanboy and I don't think Shenmue deserves to be top 10 either.

Think of it this way - Halo is the only reason Xbox is still even around. It was truly a $350 game. Love it or hate it, it has had a huge impact on the industry, and is a great game to boot.

Good post.  Agreed pretty much word for word.

Have to add to the circlejerk here . Last of Us was a highly refined game, but hardly groundbreaking or properly definitive. The excellence it achieved was similar to, say, Mario Galaxy 2 (compared to Galaxy 1 which was groundbreaking); polished in its excellence, but unambitious in some respects.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Oh, I can feel the discomfort building up on some people. Hell, I can taste it.

TLoU over OoT? Man, they are gonna get so many hits but I agree. The Last of Us is so goddamn good, especially in its storytelling. People say it isn't innovative or "transcendental" (probably not the right word) but I can't think of a game that made me feel quite like it. Uncharted 2 was a fun and over the top adventure but it didn't hit home like TLoU did.

Sure, the story or plot is not new by any means but it is the way it is potrayed, the way it progresses and just the raw emotion that the game makes you feel. All in all, well deserved.

For god's sake, it's the most awarded video in history (by critics), that's gotta mean something!

I can't find Ghost Trick anywhere in that list.

Poor Wright. He's too hipster for his own good.

OT: This list makes me sick to my stomach.

The Last of Us and Ocarina of Time are so freaking overrated it pains me.

How are games like Crash Bandicoot and Sonic The Hedgehog on the list when the other games in their trilogies are far superior?

And where's Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest? One of the most well made platformers ever isn't on the list?

When OoT was released you were what, 4 years old?  I would expect you to find it overrated now.  It doesn't hold up well but trust me it was a masterpiece back then.  As was Mario 64.  Both those games were, erm, game-changers.

Its like SoTC for me.  I played it a couple years ago on the remaster release on PS3.  I didn't appreciate it nearly as much as I probably would have if I had played it when it first released.

TLOU was great too, but I can see how it wouldn't be some people's cup o tea.

I'd agree with most of the games on the list being there. The ordering tends to be subjective in these lists so I simply ignore it.

It's also a case of how do you rate older games? Many of the old greats that made the Top 10 like FFVII, OoT and even Goldeneye, are mechanically horrible to play now, so balancing old school nostalgia with objective rating is very difficult to do.

THIS.  Thank you.

Its like the games today are on steriods.  Not to mention they still use the game mechanic cores of many of those older games.  I think trying to rate games objectively, as if you were playing the day it released, is hard to do sometimes.  These lists are impossible because of that.  Its better to just appreciate all the great games and not try too hard to worry about the numbers.

I agree with it for a large potion, but it is a bit biased towards newer games. I'm noticing that there aren't many pre-1998 games on that list (looks like only 5 games).

BTW it seems the list was made by someone who has started gaming after 2000.

Or maybe someone who isn't stuck in the past..

Or made by someone who doesn't know video games.... Empire magazine, lol.

I don't know who they are, but it's a better top than many out there. I started gaming in the 80s. This idea that these "tops" must be filled with ancient games, specially in the top slots, is silly and just for show/pretensiousness.

Unless you are trying to grade games as they were if you played them when they first released.  Which is REALLY hard, almost impossible to do.  Of course those old games don't hold up as well now AS IS.  Then again, that's like trying to compare and old baseball player from 50 years ago to now.

They're bigger, faster, better trained now, hell even on steriods sometimes (bonds, mcguire, sosa).  Hence why some people want the asterisk by the records.  Point being, the new will always BUILD off of the old, and get better at it.  Thats a good thing, and but also a testament to how important and good those old games were.

That being said maybe they should have just restricted the list to the last 8 years or so (last gen into this gen).  Just too hard to be objective otherwise.  And on top of all that, all these lists are still subjective in nature anyways.

Great list, TLOU and UC2 should both be top 10 though. TLOU being at #1 doesn't surprise me tho, that game was truly astounding.

tagging this for a read through the list later on.
