Forums - General - Serenity: The most entertaining space opera made in the last 20 years

Before watching the movie I'd seen two episodes of the show. One of which being "The Train Job", which was by far the worst episode in the series (that's the one Joss wrote to prove to Fox that he could dumb things down and make it a straight space western). The movie is what made me fall in love with the characters and their universe.

I just wished I'd been there from the start, as it would have been great to have been a part of the movement that got that movie made.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

The movie was good, and the show was really quite excellent. It's really too bad there were only 13 episodes.

The only teeth strong enough to eat other teeth.

It's on my favorite movies list ;)

They had this article on IMDB. Apparently the movie cost 39 million and made 39 million, so about zero profit. However, the DVD sales of the film and series (appraently the movie made a lot of new fans) have been so good that a new movie is still possible. Old article, but you never know.........

The 39 million is all production fees and no marketing and distribution so we really have no clue how much it actually cost.  But if DVD sales were good something could happen but it's not very likely.  I mean hey the fans were the ones that urged Joss Whedon to do the movie in the first place so you never know.

The only people who liked/payed to see this movie in the theater were Firefly or Joss Whedon fans. It's like watching a Star Trek film if you never saw the tv series, you don't give two shits about the characters. I tried watching it but couldn't get into it, contrary to what most people say, I thought the dialogue was bad and the one liners were lame. As mediocre as the Star Wars prequels were, I'd rather watch Hayden Christensen try to act than watch Serenity again. Summer Glau is money though, she was the best part of the movie.

I thought the trailers looked interesting and rented the movie without ever having seen Firefly, and loved it.  Much later, I bought the Firefly DVD boxset on the recommendation of a friend, and also loved it.  I'm not a "Joss Whedon fan" either; I have never seen an episode of Buffy and had not really been aware of his other works.

Hates Nomura.

First, sadly, a new movie just isn't possible at the moment. Joss has stated for the record that he doesn't want to return to the Firefly universe again, and really, that's all right. I like the guy's preference for not milking a particular universe for all it's worth. (See the dismal state of the Star Trek universe for an example of something that jumped the shark over a decade ago due to new series/movies and such.) He even left the popular Buffy/Angelverse to do other things, when he could have just ridden that cash cow for the rest of his life.

That said, Firefly could have been a stellar series, but it got canned before it could really take off. Given the fact that Joss' TV series seem to be increasingly less episodic after the first season, I can only imagine what awesome direction the show would have taken. But, it could be worse. Serenity gave the short-lived series a satisfactory ending, and wrapped up pretty much every burning question about the characters. (Well, except for Book's true identity, but he got killed off anyway.) How many canceled-after-the-first-season shows get that sort of treatment?

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

I disagree with this.  I watched the movie first (a long time after it was available on video) because of good reviews and the show afterwards.  The movie totally blew me away, and the show was awesome as well.

This deserves a million bumps. I just saw the whole series and saw the movie months ago. This series deserved more popularity, the episodes are just ridiculously amazing. It pains me to see this off the air and shit like MTV road rules or whatever still on t.v. And I wanna see Jewel Staite in more episodes, she was so good in that role.............. I never thought I would like a sci fi show that much, but then again it wasn't a normal sci-fi. I liked every single character. The last episode was kick ass. When River was talking to Jubal Early: "You've made Serenity angry", I almost crapped myself at the awesomeness. And, in Our Mrs. Reynolds, I felt so stupid because I just didn't see it coming, lol. Epic, and will get DVD's and the comics. Oh by the way, the new comics are either out or will be in a matter of days.

I actually liked the tv series more than the movie.

Never saw the TV show (didn´t air in germany and I didn´t want to rent or buy it) but the movie is realy great :)
