No idea. I figured out how to do this through a forum thread from google searching. Maybe it's because Wii has a 480P resolution or lower but HDMI's is higher  so it needs to check a connection first before playing off-screen? Who knows.

You're probably right. Nintendo does things that make no sense anyway.

Its a bit difficult to actually play wii games off screen though as the wiimote is a pain to use when looking at a small screen

After spending some time using Remote Play on PS4, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that second screen play is pretty much useless. You just can't beat playing it on a TV, I guess. :/
