Forums - Gaming - So what is up with the names this Generation?

Still Fairchild Channel F sounds worse than Wii U whether it makes sense or not

It's subjective, some people will agree, others won't.

For example, i think the Wii's original name, the Nintendo Revolution, was much cooler than the Wii, others will feel the opposite.

sega console names are awesome!
master system
mega drive/genesis!
saturn!
dreamcast!

playstation and xbox are cool, but i dont like the same name again and again.

nintendo has the worst names.

Both 4th and 6th gen had pretty good names for consoles. Not sure why Nintendo got lazy this gen with the names (3DS, Wii U? Meh, I get the 3D part but the whole U thing flew over my head). Xbox One is pretty silly but not close to being the worst, Atari's numbering scheme was just strange.

I do number why Atari went from numbers to cats! That always seemed weird to me!

Totally Agree. But the Dreamcast was a great name as well. I still think Nintendo should have went with the Ultra 64 instead of the Nintendo 64 as was their project name.

Apparently, the "Ultra 64" conflicted with a copyright already held by Konami (Ultra Games), so Nintendo just shortened it to Nintendo 64.

Never heard that. I thought it was just a project name like Nintendo does with lots of their stuff. Like the Dolphin.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

The Saturn got its name because Sega had a number of projects in the works in the mid-90s that were code-named after the planets.

Sega Mercury - the Game Gear

Sega Venus - the Nomad

Sega Mars - the 32X

Sega Jupiter - Basically a Saturn that used cartridges, a la the N64, instead of CD-ROMS. It would have had the same dual SH-2 chipset as the Saturn. Never released.

Sega Saturn - self explanatory. Unlike the above systems, Sega didn't change its name from the codename.

Sega Neptune - MegaDrive/32X in one system

Sega Pluto - Saturn prototype with a NetLink built in

made me think of this

Sony is the less imaginative but they are also more recognizable that way, Playstation sounded pretty cool to begin with and still do. They are also good with the irony... Playstation VITA for a ded console :(

As for Nintendo... never liked the name Wii and I still don't understand the reason for it. Its like after Gamecube, they guy with common sense at putting names left the company.

Sega and Atari were pretty good naming their consoles, so did Microsoft with the first xbox and 360 but with the One... wtf??!!

BTW I think the best gen was 6th

It might seem a little boring, but I liked how professional the 3rd gen names were. NES Nintendo Entertainment System, The Sega Master System, The Atari 7800.

Anyway this gen is the worst and 6th gen (If only because of the Dreamcast) is the best.

Oh, I thought you must have seen me mention it before.  No problem.

My friend has a huge collection of consoles and games, and I'm sure I saw a Vectrex at his house once.  But yeah, I've always loved the name.  Vectrex!  It sounds like... I don't know... something out of Tron?  Hmm... not exactly.  Meh, I don't know what it sounds like; I just know it sounds cool.  Though, I admit it may just be my 80s inner-child speaking.

Haha. Sounds incredibly creative to me. Considering im a child born at the end of the 80s/beginning of 90s :P

Bah!  You're a baby!

The thing about names like "Vectrex" - and probably one of the reasons I like them - is that they sound cool while also having a kind of retro vibe to them.  I mean, "Vectrex" just sounds like something from the 80s.  You know, the era when home computers were a new thing and they tried to name stuff to sound alien and futuristic.

I actually like its cat names better than the numbers.  That's something that seems to hold for me across the board.  There's something about putting random numbers in a name that just seems uncreative to me.  Any fool can stick a "2000" or "7800" after a name but coming up with something that sounds cool in its own right is not so easy.  Maybe that's why I prefer Atari's cat names to it's number system.  "Jaguar" and especially "Lynx" (+1 for the use of an 'X' ) are awesome names.  I'd love to see a system called the "Atari Puma" - That would be sweet!

Speaking of cat names, where the hell is Jizz_Beard with our innuendo regarding the name "Cougar Boy"?

*grabs PA microphone again*

But I'm totally with ya! :D
