Plain as day truth. It doesn't mean that a 'cursed' console can't be fun, or that they will be absolute failures, but it's pretty clear that each major 3rd home console gen has been a decline from the previous. One can also note that each 2nd gen was the most successful. Add Atari to the list : Pong console was a solid 1st gen success. Followed by 2600 which owned the market for years and popularized carts, then a myriad of failures and bankruptcy. It seems that the strongest can weather a 3rd gen disappointment, but others tailspin into irrelevance.

the difference being that sony and nintendo had good reason to be arrogant,.. they were leading their markets going into their third consoles. ms on the other hand was tied for last place. where their arrogance came from is such a mystery because they never dominated anything.

I think this was a case of perception overshadowing reality. The 360 had gained a ton of market-share for the Xbox brand and many people believed, because of that, that the natural progression would be for it to keep gaining. There honestly wasn't much basis for that but that kind of thinking is common.
I remember threads about "who would win next gen", with even Sony and Nintendo fans naming Microsoft. I think Microsoft themselves went right along with that flow and started to believe thier own hype. They thought they were in a position where they could dictate terms to the market, just as Nintendo and Sony tried before, but the market slapped them back down.

This right here. Arrogance.
The curse of the third is for real though and not all companies come back from it.
But BK is right on the money with his post, you make a console and it does well, you make the next and it does even better and exceeds your expectations. Unfortunately, you start to think that you can dictate what happens or doesn't and that you are immune to everything else. And then it comes back to bite you.
Nintendo has to be the biggest offenders. I can kinda understand why the terminated their partnership with sony, but the PS brand will not even exist at all if nintendo didnt stab sony in the back. I mean beat that. Nintendo created their very own worst enemy. And if that wasn't enough.... they completely dropped the ball with the whole crat vs CD thing.
Then look at sony, all sony had to do to emphatically win the last gen was to release the PS3 at $400. Sony could have come n at $400 if they made the blu-ray drive external (like MS did with HD-DVD) and with their year delay they could have even put 1GB of ram in the system and just had an all round better system. But noooooo..... they had to put blu-ray in the box and of course lets not forget "you will have to get an extra job to buy one".

Then it struck me, it just might be the "third major console curse" that has fallen upon MS?? I am only talking about sales, in terms of quality in games, that is a whole other matter and the console I mention were all great in that regard. Looking at the major game companies since the end of the 80´s: Nintendo, Sega, Sony and MS Nintendo: Nes was hugely successful, and was followed up by the popular SNES, which in turn was followed by the not as popular N64 (I won´t count the misstep of Virtual Boy, Nintendo deserves better). Also, the cartridge format was bashed in media and from alot of fans. Sega: The moderately succesful Master System was followed by the huge Mega Drive, only to be followed by the failure that was Sega Saturn and the imminent downfall of Sega. The early release of Saturn and obvious desperation from Sega pissed of both fans and developers. Sony: With Playstation they took over the market, and with PS2 they only expanded upon their market cap. Although PS3 has sold extremely well by any measure, it represented a major downturn of the PS brand and sold about half of its predecessor. The pricing of the PS3 pissed of everyone in the beginning. Microsoft: The original XBox was a decent entry into the market and with 360 they more than trippled the number of units sold. Now with X1, we see how it is already falling behind 360 in monthly sales and probably in total sales soon. Almost everything with the original concept seemed to piss of everyone. So, is there a third major console curse and if so, why? |
I fail to see how the Master System is a moderate success while Saturn is a failure

Actually Sony also brought MS as their worst enemy by refusing to work with MS.

Because one came from 0 brand recognition, and spun a sucessful sucessor... the other one was the second chapter in Sega dismiss (the first one was the revisionism).
