I feel like I should expand on this just a little, if for no other reason than the inflated MAL score that somehow places it at the 14th highest rated anime on the site.
Your Lie in April was decent. Not great, not bad, but decent.
Pacing was, for the most part, way too slow, to the point where you will legitimately be wishing the show would hurry up, make its point, and move to the next multiple times throughout. The anime also got a bit too melodramatic for its own good...multiple times...sometimes per episode. As another review I read pointed out, the comedy used often feels really out of place, deflating serious moments. The comedy is good, don't get me wrong, but the comedic timing left a lot to be desired. As the show wrapped up though, the story did finally balance out the melodrama with regular drama and a solid dose of feels left untarnished by the unwelcome hand of comedy. The story was ultimately a decent ride, but Your Lie in April would have benefitted from a shorter run or a more significant use of the 22 episodes.
MC, Arima, character development was solid, though, as the focus of the many ridiculous bouts of melodrama, it may have made his growth ultimately feel more significant than it actually was. The main female, Kaori, is by no means a bad character, but don't expect significant development until the last quarter of the show, and even then it's really focused in the last few episodes. Overall, I can't tell how I felt about Arima's best friends, AKA the primary secondary characters. I guess they made it all feel a bit more real, but at the same time, when the focus would shift more to them, I would be wondering why we weren't spending more time with Arima and Kaori. That may just be a personal gripe though bred from impatience, as I guess the show would feel a bit shallow without an at least semi-solid supporting cast. All of that said, characters were generally likeable, and I was content with how their stories each concluded. (Edit: I just realized I forgot the primary piano prodigies...okay, supporting character development and story conclusion could have been a lot stronger.)
Overall, I would say the show is a solid 7.3/10. Not "omg you have to watch it", but worth checking out if you're looking for a dramatic anime. I can't tell if the MAL score is so high because week by week watching helped distract from the more prominent flaws, or if the scores are generally reactionary after watching the final few episodes, but do avoid going in with inflated expectations if you haven't seen Your Lie in April yet and are considering giving it a shot.
