I never had any problem fighting a Metagross, I one shot them almost everytime. They are way too slow and are vulnerable to a whole range of common attack (dark, fire, ground).

The mega evolution may make it relevant again.

The biggest turn a mega evolution has made is Kangaskhan and Mawile, from useless they went to overpowered.

Only offensive Pokemon should get mega evolution. Milotic just wall fights, he can't do anything else. Mega blissey would be atrocious as well.
