Desert Strike and Jungle Strike (yeah EA were on fire!)

Also the Road Rash and James Pond games are worth a look.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

If you are into schumps:

Thunder Force III and IV

Gaiares

RPGs:

- Phantasy Star II & IV(if you can get a hold of Phantasy Stat I on the SMS it was way ahead of its time!)

 - Phantasy Star II may be VERY grindy and the labyrinths complex for a modern gamer (we used to spend a couple of days leveling up to reach level 56 in order to beat the final labyrinth... that seemed impossible with any lower level back then and unless you mess around a lot you will not be at this level by the time you get there...) still very deep story and world for its time.

Note on Phantasy Star III - The game aged poorly, the art is not nice and the music less interesting than the rest of the games in the series, however, this game has 6 endings, all tying in to the rest of the Phantasy Star universe, every time spanning over 3 generations, as far as I know no game has done this much in splitting the story (along with denoting the relations between the different factions of people living in this world) all in all it's interesting, just did not age that well.

- Land Stalker

- Shining in the Darkness

- Shining Force I & 2 (more strategy oriented, still considered classics)

Others:

- Streets of Rage 2 & 3 (I don't know why people like the first one, the second is probably the best beat-em up ever made)

- Ranger-X - Great unique mech style game play, amazing special effects, it's a favorite of mine

 - Golder Axe: not as good as the arcade version, but still great early Genesis game

 - Ghouls N' Ghost: pretty hard platformer, great gameplay and music... it does not look as good as the SNES game that came out later, but it's more fun, if only because you can shoot up and down as well as in front and back of your character.

 - Strider: Great platformer, first 8Mb cartridge!!

 - WonderBoy IV: great action adventure game with RPG elements

Any game by Treasure: Dynamite Headdy, Gun Star Heroes

I agree with so much of this.

First, I forgot to mention Strider and Gaiares (god that game kicked my ass; never would have seen the end if not for the invincibility code).

Phantasy Star 1 & 2 are exquisite, Golden Axe is good on Genesis but great in the arcade, and Streets of Rage 2 is the best beat 'em up for me as well.

Finally, yes, Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Genesis >>>>> than Super GnG on the SNES.  Despite the lesser graphics (still great though), it suffers from less slowdown, has faster gameplay, far better control being able to shoot up and down, and much more interesting levels and characters - particularly the final boss.

Also saw that someone else mentioned Target Earth.  I thought that game was pretty good (cool story and music), but like Gaiares, I needed the invincibility code to be able to finish it.

Oh from my sig, I've been really busy recently so rarely get time to sit and play on consoles, main reason my psn games update on the list is the vita is always with me, dj hero was actually recently played tho, that is a pretty cool game.... it has effectively nothing in common with actual decks and mixing but it's a fun game. (I got dj hero 1+2 + the deck for 7euros in a CEX store lol)

Give you an idea of date, that flower is from trying to help out Wright with a game not loading in his 360 http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=6332048 so yeah... Aerosmith was some time before that.

While that bolded game is great, it's also a PSone/N64 game, Micro Machines 1/2/96 were all on the megadrive tho and are fantastic, especially 2+96 since they have the J-Cart so you could play them 4 player.... as long as you could trust someone to stay very still on controllers 3+4 since the megadrive would crash on a whim lol.
