Forums - Microsoft - Nadella Still Commited To Xbox Brand

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/470940/microsoft-ceo-restates-commitment-to-xbox/

I also want to share some additional thoughts on Xbox and its importance to Microsoft. As a large company, I think it's critical to define the core, but it's important to make smart choices on other businesses in which we can have fundamental impact and success. The single biggest digital life category, measured in both time and money spent, in a mobile-first world is gaming. We are fortunate to have Xbox in our family to go after this opportunity with unique and bold innovation. Microsoft will continue to vigorously innovate and delight gamers with Xbox. Xbox is one of the most-revered consumer brands, with a growing online community and service, and a raving fan base. We also benefit from many technologies flowing from our gaming efforts into our productivity efforts - core graphics and NUI in Windows, speech recognition in Skype, camera technology in Kinect for Windows, Azure cloud enhancements for GPU simulation and many more. Bottom line, we will continue to innovate and grow our fan base with Xbox while also creating additive business value for Microsoft.

While today many people define mobile by devices, Microsoft defines it by experiences. We're really in the infant stages of the mobile-first world. In the next few years we will see many more new categories evolve and experiences emerge that span a variety of devices of all screen sizes. Microsoft will be on the forefront of this innovation with a particular focus on dual users and their needs across work and life.

Microsoft will continue to vigorously innovate and delight gamers with Xbox.

Imagine if he said otherwise

Even if Xbox is unprofitable for MS, I doubt they'd ever fully let go. They could always spinoff Xbox into a separate company/joint venture with another technology or entertainment company.

I always thought Comcast would be a good partner for that. Xfinity + Xbox -- there's something catchy there marketing wise. Xboxes, games, and entertainment all on a subscription basis might be the way to not only increase the XOne userbase, but also kickstart interest too. Brilliant thing about that is you trick customers into thinking its cheaper by advertising the subscription cost, but not the lifetime cost. Ex "Get an Xbox One for only $99!" ... T_T ... a month...

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

The investors would call for him to get fired ASAP

Xbox may not make as much money as Windows or MS Office, but it makes money nonetheless.

More importantly, it keeps MS's brand current in the consumers living room, not just the office space.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Damn I don't even know who Nadella is.

Consoles: 3DS, Wii U, and Vita soon. Super Paper Mario fan.

Yes we know. He reassures us every few weeks about it.

You probably mad the most valid point of all.  If the Xbox division just breaks even or even loses a little money, it doesn't change the tangible benefit that consumer awareness brings long term.  Out of sight = out of mind.  As Microsofts footprint shrinks in the corporate world via the PC, they need to maintain a visible footprint in other areas to stay relevent.

It is near the end of the end....

When they have to keep repeating things like that it usually means the opposite. They should cut the talk and just go about business.

Well, he also mentioned that they are moving the focus away from the devices and services division, and onto online and cloud.
And he also said, I quote "Nothing is off the table..."

It is nice if you can cherry pick the good points about his letter, but a 180 turn would not be a precedent for MS business practices in the past few years.
