Forums - Gaming Discussion - If the PS4 wins this gen, consoles will become obsolete

The real problem is that you people were so cheap in the previous gen:

Console gamers about PS3: Its Overpriced
PC gamers about PS4: Its Underpowered

yes specs are important, but think how much PS4 would costed if wasnt underpowered: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-cost-381-to-build-report/1100-6416251/
I wouldnt mind spending $700 on PS4 at day one but it would get critized for being too expensive

At least somebody tell me what Sony should have done the PS4 back in 2013, you cant make them more powerful without increasing the price

This is exactly the reason why a PS5 won't be so much stronger than an Xbox One X. It's technically possible, but not for a price of 499 or even less.

True, that's why I said xbox one x will last a very long time before it becomes obsolete. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if people buy a discless xbox one x (if Microsoft made one) over next generation consoles (PS5 and xbox 2).

This thread seems like a cacophany of mad men. So congrats to Kirby on triggering so much cognitive dissonance, I guess!

Seems like you were very wrong.

Congrats PS4 on winning the gen and crossing 100M.

And if a phone really were more powerful than X1 at this moment, then MS could make the discless X1 on a very small case and also Switch would be much more powerful.

It seems that it is not possible to play resident 2 remake, rdr2, etc ... on cell phones after all. Will in the coming years, cellphones will surpass ps5 and will play games of the same power without being streamed?

You are in for a treat with the PS5 then.

It'll dust the Pro/X.

This is a strange thread...the PS4 breaking 100 mill can only be good for consoles. Cellphones can't match console Specs. They haven't yet and we are a or 5 to 6 years into the gen. Even the switch a dedicated 300 dollars portable system, is somewhere in between last gen consoles and the base Xbox One in horse power. Consoles are here to stay, physical formats might dissapear (sadly) eventually though.

i doubt anything more then 4k/60fps is going to happen, maybe something like crysis 4 pushing the limits regarding beauty within that 4k/60fps framework. so dusting the x? nah, pro maybe

Im not out on this right now.... the s10+ beats a base xo and ps4 but the x1x and ps4 pro muddened the water regarding my estimation.
Because if the next gen is only a bit stronger then the x1x or pro the phones are the way to go, expecially with stadia aswell in mind.

I have no clue whether an S10+'s Snapdragon is equal to whatever CPU is in a base model PS4. The RAM looks fine at 8 - 12 GB. Current prices have that phone listed for $1000 on both Amazon and Best Buy though. So, even if an S10+ really were as powerful as a base model PS4, there would still be a ridiculous price gap. Or are consumers so idiotic that they will gladly pay a grand for a phone over four or five years of payments?

We don't know enough about Stadia at this point to know if it will be a success. There's no price, and no list of games. Who knows if internet in the US will be good enough to run it for most consumers.

Snapdragon 855 should beat an 8-core Jaguar by a sizable margin.

Bandwidth is where things fall short though... The 855 will only offer about 34.13GB/s of bandwidth, which is going to limit it's gaming capabilities, especially at higher resolutions that the Playstation 4 will target.

GPU wise the Adreno is surprisingly capable and extremely efficient, more so than AMD's ageing Graphics Core Next architecture... But at the end of the day, the Playstation 4 has a sheer larger number of functional units which means it should win in every scenario.

Now when comparing Snapdragon against the Xbox One, things start to lean towards the Snapdragon a little more, but the Xbox One should still hold a slight edge in the GPU/Bandwidth department.

Not for another generation or two. Not mobile, but streaming will replace consoles eventually. Too many people not taking Stadia whatever it's called seriously enough.
