Forums - Microsoft - No 1080p on Xbox One Due To Memory Bandwidth/ESRAM/RAM

^Not really a tech guy either, but I think you've got it right, ESRAM selectively renders a scene each frame automatically, increasing resolution or textures on character or object in the foreground, and lowering resolution or textures on an object in the distance or in your peripheral vision to compensate. So tiled resources might not allow for true 1080p, but it should definitely allow for 1080p on certain elements on screen while others are rendered at a lower resolution.

All I know is that the June SDK, which I've heard enabled tiled resources as well as the 8% of the GPU that was previously reserved for Kinect, is allowing Bungie to hit 1080p on Xbox One. I wouldn't be surprised if several other games later this year follow that precedent.

true.  meanwhile sunset overdrive said they weren't going to upgrade from 900p but instead do something else with those resources.  i read on one article that the 360's esram was the main reason a lot of last gen games had awkward, sub-720p resolution.  xbox will probably be plague with resolution wars for the entire gen but a higher percentage will probably hit 1080p moving forward.

Us Nintendo underlords laugh at this entire concern for more p!

i don't see what so big deal about 1080p games since all lower resolution XB1 multiplatform games still get the same review score as 1080p PS4 ver. anyway...

Yet several games hs reached it, like Forza 5, Killer Instinct and the upcoming MCC for example. I Think is is mainly due to laziness, incompetence or design choice when they do not reach/aim for 1080p/60fps. Also, we see in games like Ryse, that resolution is only part of what make a game gorgeus since that game is, in my view, the best looking game out there, coming in at 900p/30fps.

There are a coupld of misleading statements in this post:

1 - Killer Instinct is 720p

2 - Ryse has constant frame rate drops, and there is nothing impressibe about rendering a nice image at a very low frame rate, given enough time per frame an xbox 360 or a ps3 could reach the same image quality... the problem is putting it in motion at the right resolution! (PS4 exclusives like Killzone/Infamous:SS are real examples of what should be expected as a baseline for games released on a console now).

3 - games that have simple enough lighting model, like Forza 5 or Castle Wolfenstein, as well as being handled by good teams... will reach 1080p on the xb1, that has never been put into question... and this is not to downplay them, Wolfenstein is a great shooter, it's almost the same on both consoles (the xb1 version has slight resolution drops here and there, but I bet that even I would never notice it), however, comparing the image quality in Wolfenstein and Killzone:SF leaves one wondering if they are actually running on the same system (talking as as PS4 owner here) Killzone:SF stands head and shoulder above Wolfenstein in therms of graphics, while compared to xb1 exclusives it's probably not standing out visually as either good or bad.

So yeah, there is a real difference in the console's performance, games that don't need that much will be the same on both machines, hell if the requirements are low enough a game could be the exact same on the PS36- as well as the PS4... they all allow output at 1080p after all!

1080p is important, but to say that a game looks like crap just cuz is not 1080p is very close minded. Like I said before, look at the wiiu, by choosing clever art styles nintendo can push the boundrys of visuals without having to pump out extreme resolutions.

And I agree with you that 1080p60hz will be nothing by next year, the only variables will be added effects and added elements.

Of course the game can look good. But no art style can overcome the fact that upscaling will add aliasing and generate a blurry result. It happens to every game on any platform. Even games like MK8 and SM3DW with an amazing art style suffer with jaggies caused by resolution.

Thought we knew this since last E3......when will we stop repeating year old news as fresh?

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Again, you miss the point completely...and the fact that you didn't read the rest shows that you can't really debate intelligently in any case...but let me spell it out for you.

The problem isn't that the games look or play poorly.  The problem is that the PERCEPTION of the console, as a whole, is that it is underpowered...and the fact that you are ARGUING about it shows that it is, indeed, a problem.

You can "defend" the console all you want...it's not going to change the facts on the ground....and that is that the Xbox One is perceived as inferior by the buying public.  Rant about it all you want, it is not going to sell one more console for Microsoft.

Honestly I don't think this is that big of a deal YET, cause everything about the games is the same except for the resolution, but if down the road a game is really taxing and 720p on PS4 and they need to seriously downgrade the X1 version to get it to 720p then I could see it being a problem.

That is true.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

I don't think 1080p will magically become nothing on the xb1, except on games with simple graphics... because of the eSram size, you just can't fit that much in there. While on the PS4 it's already pretty much a given, since the release of the console we only had two (Battlefield 4 and Watch_Dogs... 3 if you want to nit pick and count the multi-player portion of Killzone:SF... that's it!) XB1 on the other hand it's hit and miss, about 50% of the games are sub 1080p, exclusives or no, I would not expect it to change much.
