What I don't get is how being open world magically destroys the platforming like some people think. If you're chasing stars then you still need to go through that platforming obstacle course, it's just that the starting point begins from wherever you happen to be in the world atm. I don't see why it can't play like every other amazing 3D Mario and be open world at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive.
If its open world then it should incorporate some games elements.
1. Open world in jak and daxter style.
2. Transportation in mario kart style.
3. Boss fights in super smash style.
4. RPG elements in paper mario style.
No, Sunshine was the closest thing to it and had the worst platforming. The sprawling Savannah level in 3D World was the worst in the game because it was flat, empty and open world. Mario would need to be permanently augmented with F.L.U.D.D 2.0 or there would be some quick travel which would defeat the purpose of a platformer.
I just want something similar to Super Mario 64. It was basically a bunch of smaller open world's to explore with most of the world's stars there to grab as you found them. Also sphere running sucks so I want that to go. And I want an actual 3D game obviously, not the BS we got from 3D Land/World. They rely on the 2D style platforms in a 3D world and it doesn't work.
All I want is a Mario 64: 2
Yes, a modernized open world game like Mario64 or Banjo-Kazooie would be great but it needs to have more variety than Sunshine. The linearity of the New Super Mario Bros. and 3D Land / World games is boring.
Updated OP with my last long post to give more of an idea of what I mean.
I actually prefer mario 3d world because you can play in short spurts. I am a full time registered nurse and have been gaming since NES and love how 3d world harkens back to the original design/style. Playing the game made me smile a lot. It was rather enjoying. Mario Galaxy was fun but it really got complicated sometimes.
