"I recently came across this article via N4G where the writer presented an argument to convince others to purchase the Xbox One from the 360. While I don’t care to get into the semantics of it all (since it’s not a bad article really), why are they trying to define what a “real gamer” is? The title which reads “Why Real Gamers Should Upgrade to a Xbox One Today” is obvious clickbait, but at the same time, why are gamers trying to separate themselves into different classes instead of uniting as one?"
A “real gamer” doesn’t exist

"There are hardcore gamers that put hours into crafting strategies, working with their team mates for the best possible mix of action, then there are those who even game at the professional level (e.g. eSports). Then there are gamers like me who play on a more casual basis. For instance, I play more popular titles on my PC like Call of Duty, TitanFall, Dead Island, etc. and just game for just an hour a day just to pass time before I get back to work. Also, there are those that spend time on their mobile phones playing games like Cut The Rope or Candy Crush.
It’s clear that people put in different levels of interest into gaming, but one thing that’s clear is that your console doesn’t define who you are. Retro gamers could easily make the point that real gamers play NES because it’s one of the more original gaming systems while the Xbox One is just an evolution (along the gaming platform line)."
Your specs don’t define who you are
"Everyone has their preferences. I like to game on my PC since I don’t really spend that much time gaming otherwise, so investing in a console really doesn’t make sense. There are some who are happy playing games on their phones while others prefer more dedicated systems like the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, and others. For instance, the author makes the point about Twitch being a bonus for the XBOne. It’s really hard to say that “real gamers” are those that stream their gameplay. Yes, the Xbox One is a pretty cool package, but not everyone is going to maximize every single feature on it."

"Here’s another related example. If I bought a McLaren or a Lamborghini, does that make me a “real car enthusiast”? Anyone with the right amount of cash can fork out and buy an expensive car and not even know the basics like how to change their oil or jump start a dead battery."
Let’s stop drawing lines
"I could go on and on trying to hit the 1,000 word mark, but I think by now you get my point. If you buy an Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, PC, Android or iOS device for gaming purposes, then you’re a gamer. If you still play your NES or Atari 2600, you’re also a gamer. The important thing to understand is that we all have preferences for different systems, just like we have political or religious preferences. The important thing is that we respect each others’ preferences for the greater good, in this case, having a good time playing video games. *drops mic*
Edit – Clarified a point regarding the overall note of the original article on Gottabemobile. However my argument still stands because owning a last-gen console does not make you less of a gamer."
