Were they ever truly gone

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

Then Nintendo and Sony wouldn't be competing. From what I know Sony were building the CD based system for Nintendo. But Nintendo refused and thus Playstation was born. Nintendo created their own biggest rival.

I think the race between the N64 and PSX would have been much closer.

"I think it will be the HDS"-Me in regards to Nintendo's next handheld.

N64 could never had been a disc based console to begin with, because Nintendo never believed in the technology from the very start when they were still working with Sony and some other companies to create a CD-console. And the piracy risks were so high, that Nintendo made sure not to adopt it. Was it the smartest move? Coming from Nintendo, who was invincible in that niche market for that time, yes. The thing that really hurt Nintendo the most, was their capacity to change to the market after losing the throne. And Nintendo still feels like a fish out of the water, still choosing the most uncommon/odd technologies. And at that, they're not being smart.

Considering that the  standard CD was around since the 1980s it seems very unlikely that the disc being developed for them by Sony was the standard everyday CD ROM that can be read by any simple CD reader. It is very likely it would have been proprietary like on the GC, Wii and Wii U. That takes piracy out of the equation.

Sony has always tied in entertainment with their consoles so using the standard CD on the playstation made sense. Seeing they helped develop the CD disc anyway it made sense to use their own product.

That's easy. IF N64 had been CD based, it would have retained most of the third party games that left it, like FFVII, like Symphony of the Night, like most Capcom fighting games, like Resident Evil, like Metal Gear Solid, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Had that happened, N64 would have reigned supreme along with Nintendo, Rare and Acclaim's offerings. The Playstation might have been a fart in the wind for all we know. But that didn't happen, so......*shrugs*

Well if it happened it may mean that nintendo and sony never had a falling out and may have become some sort of partners meaning may never came into being. And maybe leprechauns fart four leaf clovers, it doesn't matter.

This is one of those regular threads.

Am I the only one who thinks the N64 would be a Nintendo-Philips system? I mean, Nintendo gave up on the Sony SNES CD, because they thought Sony was asking too much. Then they gave up on Philips and this "CD non-sense" altogether. If they continued their deal with Philips, wouldn't that partnership still stand during the N64...?

Anyway, the PS1 had a two-year head start. That's a MASSIVE advantage. Granted, at least Square would probably stick to Nintendo, so it would have been much closer, as the PS1 wouldn't have one of its biggest system sellers. Maybe MGS would also be a N64 game...? Hard to tell. As a consequence, the PS2 wouldn't be as dominant, the Wii wouldn't exist as we know it today...

No hope for Sega though. They still would've died. Xbox would exist too as well.

This although I think Sony would still have been a big player but the N64 classics Nintendo did put out combined with persuambly better ports due to graphics hardware that the N64 had with carts alone, would have made Nintendo the primary winner of that generation.
