Dragon Quest XI development underway

Square Enix advancing towards series' 30th anniversary.

June 11, 2014 / 07:55 PM EDT / Sal Romano (@salromano)

Dragon Quest XI is currently in development, series creator Yuji Horii said during a recent radio program.

Horii appeared on the FM West Tokyo Radio program Mangaku N-Channel SP, where he said the sequel was in development for the first time.

The program featured a look back at the Dragon Quest series, with Horii recalling his personal experiences and stories.

When the topic of Dragon Quest‘s future came up, Horii said development of Dragon Quest XI is advancing towards the series’ 30th anniversary, which is in 2016. He also said he wants to play it on a big screen, suggesting the game is in development for console (rather than smartphones). A specific platform was not revealed.

We last heard of a new Dragon Quest in April, where Horii said that Square Enix is making “the next” game, but wasn’t clear about whether it was Dragon Quest XI.

So being that Horii wants to play this on a big screen, where do you think SE will put this game at?  Wii U or PS4?   They need to have this sell well in Japan and currently Wii U has the upper hand in install base. However, once the new MGS, KH3 and FFXV launch things could look radically different. Also, if the game gets localized that's all advantage Sony considering the PS4 install base should  increase substantially in the west over the Wii U.  Thoughts?  Predictions?

Maybe both?

There's really just no way to know I suppose... They have built rapport with Nintendo systems with 9, 10, and classic rereleases. They might have a shot at standing out more on WiiU and I don't think the install bases will be too different in Japan.

Unless Nintendo has talked to them the obvious choice right now for localizing to the West is probably the PS4. But by those simple comments I don't think its leaning clearly either way. I'd feel better either way if they brought DQVII 3DS west...

That would be interesting.

Lets be honest here... If a developer has a choice between a wiiU and a ps4 and there is no backdoor money exchange going on, it would be for the ps4

Wii U, I think. It wouldn't exactly be the first time it happened, but it's hard for me to see Dragon Quest breaking with Nintendo.

It will be both. They've already dabbled with Nintendo with DQX for Wii U and the other one for 3ds but being SE they surely won't want to pass up on the potential sales of the PS4.

I don't care which system it's on, as long as it comes to the US, and preferably as long as it isn't another MMO or MonHun clone.

Why not both?

Dragon Quest VIII did very well on PS2 though. The series has ping ponged between both Sony and Nintendo over the years.
