The brand had nothing to do with it. Sony had to blow so much money to turn things around. I think the numbers are in the billions, and I believe they were never close to recovering those losses  back.

A little outdated, but it should paint a good picture on what a financial disaster the ps3 was, 2010 was the year the ps3 becam profitable.

what on earth are you talking about, the  PS3 did die at $599, how do you think the 360 won the USA against it by such a wide margin if not for those intitial missteps made by Sony; price, games, and price. Maybe you'd like to rethink your argument because the PS3 didn't stay at $599 very long and the only reason it came back to beat the 360 world wide is because it lowered it's price. that's it.

if you're going to revise history, at least do it with  a modicum of objectivity and veiled deciet... this way people don't quite catch on to what you're doing.

"Not the PS3 though".... lol

I don't think some people understand what I meant with "branding power". It's not some magical thing that makes your system sell.

I never said the PS3 recovered on brand power ALONE - but if it was an unknown console, all that money Sony spent would have been for nothing. People were willing to give the thing a second chance because it was the PlayStation 3. Also, no price cuts would have sparked consumer's interest if it was an unknown system. Hence why any other console would have died - literally died, faded into obscurity.

So yeah, brand power. It matters.

Do you really think Sony branding power is that strong? Or are you talking about just the games division? Don't get me wrong, Sony makes good products but I think they are overpriced.

Using your reason, then why isn't that brand power lifting the vita? You are overestimating the power of the name

Greatest reason for the PS4s success is Microsoft.

Their biggest enemy in this console war is their biggest friend. :P

a) Nintendo/MS fucked up
b) Price/Performance compared to wiiU/X1
c) The final years of the ps3 were its greatest years but the final years of the wii/360 were its worst years in terms of quality games

good summary i think.

Especially reason c. I haven't seen that comment around here much if at all, and it's a very good one.

Microsoft and Nintendo messed up. It becomes clear when you realize that barring the launch PS4 numbers aren't anything special, far away from PS2's or Wii's.

Three reasons:

1. Image: Playstation has developed the biggest follower base over the course of four generation of consoles with almost no fault, and the PS3 is still successfully selling and welcoming new games.
The console design and their advertising clearly is better looking that Xbox One Mountain Dew Doritos american couch potato image. Finally the games they're curating, the studio they own are a great combination of japanese, european and american touches.

2. No DRM: this wouldn't have been an advantages if Microsoft didn't make the mistake of wanting to force feed people with an unwanted, unfriendly future of DRM and more importantly the Kinect. Most people are no stupid american ignorant who don't see the almost cliché danger of the Kinect.

3. Future proof, Now: The lower price combined with the little power gap between XBO and PS4, which makes it more future proof since when you buy a console you're going to use it in 6 years from now, made it the top choice even in the US.
