I think a five year life cycle, especially now days, has a huge potential of being much worse for the gamer. Look at how long it's taking us to get some decent games on the PS4 and Xbox One. It'll be around two years before we start getting decent support for the consoles and only three good years before the next set of console releases. I think six years should be the new minimum life span of a console.
The Playstation lived five years, and it was an amazing console, but the first two years were rather slow compared to its remaining years. It slowed back down after the PS2's release, but we still gotquality releases.
