I don't think there is a problem with the wii u design. I have a PS4 and have had every playstation console ever. I bought the MK8 bundle and must say I am impressed. The wii pad is awesome and a better designed than remote play. I like that it has all the shoulder buttons and isn't as awkward to hold as the vita. I like the tv control and the fact that it recognizes my family owned cable company. OK the graphics are not as good as the PS4 but It is newer than wii u.Maybe this was the right time for my first nintendo product but I am very pleased and don't feel I wasted $300 on it

This is what I've always thought about the Wii U, so many just don't give it a chance and try it out for themselves. The lingering perception of the Wii, the influence of the media and the apparently wrong so called 'common gamer's wisdom'  about the positioning of this console have all been weights dragging this brilliant console down. I've hardly seen anyone actually try out the Wii U and not like it. This is a console positioned to be all things to all gamers no matter their needs.

It is true Nintendo have a lot to do with Marketing and ensuring a healthy stream of first party games for the Wii U but I've always believed you can't keep a good 'console' down. The Wii U will rise. Hopefully some of the 3rd parties who earlier gave the Wii U a try will be encouraged to come back if the current momentum has some reasonable legs.

I expect the new Zelda to be slow paced, one player, with lots of exploration, etc. it sounds to me like a not easy bestseller.

Yeah, it looks like if a game like Mario Kart 8 coupled with a free game promotion released every week, then the Wii U could sell at respectable levels. Clearly, the MK8 hardware boost is a victory for those Nintendo fans who refuse to acknowledge that the Wii U itself is a big problem.

People plays on smartphones and tablets. Hardware is never the problem, games is.

Edit: well, at least not a problem for Wii U.

How is it that MK8 is not a Wii sequel with higher resolution? Was it the gliding from MK7 or the limited anti-gravity feature that marked the difference between generations?

Most definitely. Both gliding and limited anti-gravity would not have been possible on the Wii due to HW-constraints.

Next gen, we will get full anti-gravity, not limited one. Of course, the PS4 would already be able to do full anti-gravity, but then again the system is not designed to output high-quality cartooney visuals (different processor architecture, too advanced floating comma calculations and such), hence Mario Kart per se would not be possible.

But they need to be smart and that's the part I fear.

Did you mean smart or did you mean that you want Nintendo to listen everything from the consumers? I don't want Nintendo to be that. I don't want Nintendo to be a Sony.

Should I really spend much time discussing this or should I just point to Wii U hardware sales in four weeks' time?

While my previous post was hyperbole, it's still clear that the Wii U would need a big game like Mario Kart 8 released every month in order to sell. There aren't many games of Mario Kart 8's caliber though.

Mario Kart can sustain a boost if actual great games were released. Aside from MK, there's nothing more people can buy with the exception of WWHD for those who haven't played the original on NGC. So, once again is a library problem, not a hardware problem.

Hmmm...

So The Wind Waker HD is a big game like Mario Kart 8?

Yes to him its the 2nd biggest cuz

1. SM3DW =/= Real 3D Mario

2. DK:TF =/= Metroid

 :P

Design?
o thought was the drought of games that made wii U flop last year.

I still can't take you seriously. Especially with those jabs at Super Mario 3D World. Unless, "Wii sequels with higher resolutions" was meant for something else.

Actually, I still can't take anyone seriously who says MK8 proves the console is not the issue.
