Look at this Official Screenshot released by Nintendo back in February. The Death Stare is clearly evident, but it went unnoticed by everyone, instead sinking into our subconscious to fester away for 3 months. How much of a coincidence was it that el33tonline.com chose this screenshot for their article from six availabe at the bottom of the page?  Here's a close up...

Seriously, though, I doubt anyone at Nintendo would have guessed a phenomenon like this could have come out of MK8, let alone dreamed it up.

I'd argue Mario Kart TV was included as a form of advertising, that's why the option to upload to Youtube is there. Given Nintendo haven't linked Miiverse with other social networks, it's a step forward for them to allow direct uploading to Youtube to one of Wii U's biggest releases yet.

Specific animations like Luigi's stares weren't put in because Nintendo knew they would lead to viral advertising, but they put mechanisms in the game that would make it easier for stuff like this to spread.
