Forums - Gaming - PC vs Console Gaming: Which Is Actually More Expensive?

First up, you notice how you're rebutting a dude saying 360>PS3 by saying PC>360...

how about those crippled graphics in 360 RTSs? including future releases like supreme commander which is no where near the quality of the PC version.

I haven't seen any video's to shut down this argument, but I'd be interested to kno how the final product turns out.

How about the best FPSs are on PC? they do kill all console's FPSs combined

That's very subjective, I think the legions of Halo and Killzone fanboys/girls would have something to say about that. Also, what FPS are you talking about? AND problem with PC is that, 360 the same FPS will always look good, PC, it depends on what you've got in the case.

How about Gears on PC which kills the 360 version?

Last time I checked, Gears had frame rate issues and tearing on a good PC, which weren't there on the 360 version.

How about audiosurf which has outsold all Wii titles so far? minus pack-ins

That's not a bad argument, except why would you go for Wii titles? you know that they don't sell well.

How the fact that UT3 has Mouse and keyboard support for the PS3 version when no FPS game on the supports it?

It's called being fair. I do believe that UT3 should be played with mouse and keyboard (it is that sort of FPS) but if all games were to adopt keyboard+mouse support, that's all anyone would play with and all the people that don't want to play with a mouse and keyboard would get screwed over (I mean they opted for the console for the controller right?)

I think the whole point of making the gaming rig "expensive" is that fact that, your *insert random console* can play ALL the games made for it. To make this comparison fair (at least in some way) you have to put in a PC that can play ALL games made for PC.

I'm not saying the article writer is correct or his comparison is entirely fair, but it's not exactly fair to say that you spent way less money and can't play all the games.

I enjoy both PC and console gaming, get the best of both worlds: Able to play certain FPS (CS and UT3) the way they were meant to be played (Mouse + Keyboard) and able to play certain FPS the way they were designed to be played (with a controller = Halo and eventually KZ2). Best thing, when I play games on PC that need a analog stick (Sports games mostly), I just plug in the Six-Axis and I'm set. Life is good :)

If you're an avid gamer and buys alot of games, then PC ends up being cheaper than PS3/360.

Lets see,

CPU- $90 (1.8ghz up to 3.0ghz though. Mainly a useful placeholder)
CPU fan - $20
Motherboard - $150ish
Video card - like $350 (7800gt)
Case $110 (Antec Nine Hundred)
PSU - $60 Thermaltake 500w
Case fan - $7 (extra 120mm fan)
RAM - $100 (but I think it was cheaper after the rebate, I can't remember so I'll just leave it at this price)
Monitor - $120 (19" CRT)
Speakers - $40 (logitech 5.1 setup, bought used)
Keyboard - free (took this one from my parent's Dell, got them another free one)
Mouse 1 - $50 Logitech G5 (got a little bit off, but still stupid because it was from Circuit City)
Mouse 2 - free (you're regular three button logitech mouse, great to take to campus to use with the Mac computers)
Printer - free (10 year old HP and still works well)
Thermal Paste - $5 I guess I'll count it, why not?
DVD/RW and DVD/r - $60
Media card reader - $15
Hard drives - $200

Total = $1377

I had a different case, motherboard, CPU, ram, and a PSU though (I first bought everything three years ago), but it's not as if there was anything really wrong with them. However, now that I've upgraded, I get to give these parts to my parents who's 6 year old Dell feels like an old dog who just looks at you when you tell it to "Come here".

The thing I'd be buying next would have to be another video card. The 7800gt does me well, but I think it's about time to upgrade to the 8x00 series. I'm waiting to see what happens with the new 9x00's though. The 9600gt 512 is like $150-$180 and a little under the 8800gt 512 in terms of power. So I think I may just wait a little longer to see what will happen when the higher end 9x00's come out.

Lair is just one example that proves not all consoles games are playable. (at least doesn't play well.)

So what If i can't play one game on my PC like Crysis. The fact is Crysis sales are falling short because they designed a game that can only run on 5%-10% of PC. Not very smart if you ask me.

Well, I guess that argument is valid.
But, remember this, Microsoft has (free) 3 year warranty on every 360 since launch.
PC warranties usually have a price attached to them. (Well, for Futureshop or Bestbuy anyways)
And even if it did break down, throw another $500 on that (rounding up, really lazy) and it's still cheaper than the Home Theatre PC and slightly more expensive than the Gaming PC (By $50 or so, again really lazy).

While a general warranty on a console is a plus and for something on the PC, you'd have to buy something like a Dell (or another name/store brand like that). I believe the only reason there is that 3 year warranty is because of the terrible RROD thing and even then, the warranty only covers a RROD.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm recalling from memory here. Didn't Microsoft extend their warranty and do all of this stuff just because of the RROD?

It's not a vaild argument because I'm sure everyone on hear has a PC theres that cost plus whatever concole. If your a PC gamer you can get 2 for one a PC for computer things and for gaming. In my case I do work with Maya Photoshop and Z-brush all open at the same time. So for me gaming is a perk of haveing it not why I bought it.

Also I have a cable running from my office to my living room TV so when I don't feel like doing pc gaming in front of my monitor I can sit on my couch and play. (either with wireless mouse and Keyboard or with Xbox 360 controller)

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

Consoles are not as much fun as PC's

I have a PS3 and its OK but i know what the graphics will look like on it now until the new playstation is out...

I also have a high end pc which is capable of playing Crysis on high resolutions and high detail and there are so many types of games that are constantly coming out which keeps the platform fresh and exciting.

Also i look forward to the next year or so as i dont know what games will look like then ;)

PC's yes are more expensive but you pay for quality .
