They beat La Coruna 7-1 last weekend, that should be good enough. Although rumor has it that Real Madrid is pushing for Catalonia's independence to remove Barca from the Primera Division. |
I don't believe Real Madrid would want Barcelona to leave. El Clasico is huge.

That isn't good enough when they're 19 points below Barcelona in la liga and got kicked out of the cup by Leganés today at home. They're going to face PSG in CL's next round; the season could be over for them in February.

Leganés, huh? Never heard of them before. But that makes it sound like Real Madrid is a major flop, not a MAJOR flop. |
Last year was their first season in la liga, so it's normal.
Well, I've always thought, even when Madrid has won two Champions in a row, that the team was doomed to failed in the mid-term because they haven't actually played pretty well in the last years. It was about to happen. And Zidane is more like a living footballer legend than a proper trainer, so I didn't see how the team could do better.
Also, Leganés is a pretty solid team, so I'm not surprised about the result.
I'm just happy we have the Nations League because it gives less meaning friendlies.

But I believe this was the actual thought process behind the decision.
"Gee, the UEFA Euro and FIFA World Cup make a lot of money and bring in tons of viewers. How can you get more of that? I know, let's have a major international tournament every year!"
Ireland draw Denmark and Wales again. BORING.
I'm travelling to the Ireland v France friendly in Paris this may instead. Don't give a shit about the nations league.
About Madrid. I'd still fancy them to beat psg.

i just dont understand their form this season. i was never convinced zidane was a solid coach, his team was absolutely crazy good. but how can they be doing so bad this season is beyond me. even if i went and coached the real madrid team it shouldnt be performing this badly

Yeah and on that basis it's not a bad idea. I mean Rugby has a major international tournament every year and it works great there. But 3 teams do not a league make! Should have been 8 teams per division, single round robin, top of the division wins the trophy and bottom is relegated. Would have made for an interesting tournament. Instead we've got this absolute mess of a tournament. |
I think of it the same way I think of annualized sequels. If there's a video game franchise I love, I like it when they release games a few years apart because then I get more excited as less is more, but as soon as they start releasing a game every year I will lose some interest in it. What I liked about international football is that it was one of the few sporting events that didn't happen every year, it was really the most exciting thing. But now to me it feels like an annualized sequel just like every other sporting event.
