Yeah, that's a bit too strong of a description... It may take a few sales, but I don't think it would hamper 3ds sales. If anything, it would boost 3ds game sales, because people who would otherwise not buy a 3ds would now buy it's games. I have a 3ds xl, and I would still buy an adapter for the wiiu.
