I disagree with that. there's countless shooters, but not countless other games in other genres. shooters probably make up the vast majority of the market these days.

I disagree with that. Here: http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/new-releases/ps4/date
is a sample of new releases for PS4 in the last 90 days.
There are 40 games, out of which only 11 can be classified as shooters, if you reeeallly stretch the meaning of that word.
So, in this sample only a bit more than 25%, which certainly isn't a vast majority.
For more in depth analysis I lack time and patience...

alot of those are smaller PSN games. If you want to count those, then fine, you have a point. I%99 of games I get are from retail and the majority of those are shooters.
Games are games, where a person buys them from is irrelevant. Had I really wanted to prove a point, I would have provided a sample of Steam games, I'm sure the percentage would have been even lower.
Also, these last few months have been very quiet on the boxed, retail game front, so we had Titanfall, Infamous, Trials Fusion, LEGO Hobbit, Spiderman, Child of Light, Bound by Flame, MLB The Show, Wolfenstein, Watch Dogs and Mario Kart (my appologies if I missed something, writing it from memory). So only 2 of 11 are shooters...
They generally sell well and developers want to make lots of money at the end of the day.
I think the Main reason Shooting games are so successful is because of the violence.
I suppose that's what people want to see.
Sex also sells but there's a big taboo about this issue in our society and in video games .
Sex is Wrong Violence is ok.
That's the message in video games tv and movies.

TV shows have always had lots of sex in them and less violence.

Mario is also successful due to violence! Killing Goombas and Koopas is part of what makes Mario so fun after all!

Violence is everywhere.
Wrestling matches for kids
Action movies that shows people being brutally killed
TV shows that shows lots of violence.
When it comes to the other issue there's a big fear.
It almost feel like a crime to talk about it or think about it.
I really don't understand why there's such a big taboo with this issue in our society.
