Forums - Gaming - Why do people make such a big deal about backwards compatibility?

Things break down. It's nice to have that new console to take the old ones place just in case. Plus PS2 games on PS3 were awesome. They got rid of the slow downs on fighters and I'm sure on other games aswell.

Go Team Venture! I still don't get the Wii, PS Move,  and Kinect.

Have you ever seen Marvel VS capcom 2 on the Xbox running on a pal 360? :D That is one time I think backwards compatibility should just not be there, while the game will boot from the disk it can't render the sprites correctly at all, they're just a mess but... you can play the game... as long as you are fine playing with distorted characters.

Saying that Tekken Tag Tournie for the PS2 does not run properly on Pal 60gb ps3 as well, slowdown all over the place, no idea why it's in Tekken Tag because Tekken 4/5 work as smooth as butter and those games are 10X the graphics of Tekken Tag.

i guess the real question is why some people seen to don't care about BC at all

edit: i was planning in selling my wii after i purchase my wii u, since i'm yet (maybe never) to discover all the awesome games that wii has to offer, bc was really helpful for me. Now i need to hurry and find some games on the wiishop before they turn off the serves

We reap what we sow

no damn idea.

"how am i supposed to play my ps3 games on my ps4 now?"

on your damn fucking ps3, thats how.

i think i know why backwards compatibility was not included with the XB1/PS4, emulation, it would make emulating the 360 and PS3 very easy as the XB1/PS4's architecture is now pretty much exactly the same as a PC, they both use X86 which is the same as the PC, the PC is far more flexible with hardware and anyone with a moderate to high end PC could easily run an emulator and play 360/PS3 games at far higher resolutions and frame rates.

Current PC build:

Asus Z97I-Plus, i5 4790K @ 4.6ghz, EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0 1377/1853/124%, Corsair Vengence Pro 2400mhz 2x 8192mb, Corsair RM850, Corsair H80i, 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD, 750GB Seagate Momentus XT SSHD, 320GB Weston Digital HDD, Corsair 230T, Corsair K50 Raptor, HP XQ500AA mouse, Windows 10 Pro 64bit. iiyama Pro Lite G2773HS 120Hz 1Ms G2G gaming monitor.

Skip to about 40 seconds in, just crazy that they even allow this to boot.

When I first heard about backwards compatibility I thought it was the most amazing idea ever. Then I've utilized the feature maybe four times in my life. It just seems like a waste of resources at this point, especially as digital distribution grows.

If someone has last gen baggage while upgrading, it will make it easier for them to stay with the same company (see PS1->PS2.) It can also help build brand loyalty (again, PS1 to PS2). Lastly, it is easier to have it all in one box.

Money saving and convenient. All the old Wiimotes work with the Wii U. So there were 5 kids playing the Wii U here this afternoon. One on the gamepad, two with the Wii U Pro controllers, and two on the old Wiimotes. They played Rayman Legends, SSB Brawl and Tank Tank Tank.

Emulate the way the CELL process's games? on a moderately powerful PC? Really?
