Why do people make such a big deal about backwards compatibility?

If someone has last gen baggage while upgrading, it will make it easier for them to stay with the same company (see PS1->PS2.) It can also help build brand loyalty (again, PS1 to PS2). Lastly, it is easier to have it all in one box.
