Forums - Gaming - 720P or 1080i

New user here, but I use my Wii U in 1080i mode on a 1080p capable TV and notice no issues. I personally think it looks better. It may be a personal choice thing.

I do, and it's perfectly fine when there is no lag. 30fps is perfectly fine when there is no drop off in speed, and the only problems I have are when the fps drops below 30, which is when it is hard to play. A steady 30fps is perfectly playable.

OT: 1080i if you have a TV more than 1280 x 720, if you have a 1280 x 720 TV stick with 720p.

so like you said before: maybe is just you

but at least for me: 720@60fps >>>>> 1080@30fps

I guess we can agree to disagree :)

What is the actual resolution of the tv panel?
If it's 1280x720 native, then 720p is your best option.
If it's 1366x768 you might get some more detail with 1080i. (1920x540 alternating lines) The difference will be minor anyway.

It also depends on what your tv does, de-interlacing and scaling produces extra lag. Easy to check while holding the WiiU game pad up next to the tv. 720p is probably faster.

Ok. So it turns out my TV is capable of 1080P.

That's what the website for the TV says. Yet, when I go to settings, 1080P isn't an option. If you (someone) could figure out why, that'd be awesome.

720P vs 1080P can actually result in zero differences in image quality.

It depends on Panel size + Resolution + Viewing distance, obviously everyone's circumstances will be different.
I sit probably 30-60cm from my computer and there was a MASSIVE difference between last-decades 1080P and 1440P, but at the other side of the room, I can't tell the difference.

Did you make sure to change it manually on the wiiU instead of Auto?

With 720p the refresh rate is faster than 1080i. The native rendered resolution for 1080i is obviously better , but could cause the appearance of screen tearing or frame jumping. I'd say 720p.

I can change the Wii U to 1080P settings but my TV settings doesn't allow me to click a 1080P option. The Wii U recommends having it set to the same settings as your Tv.

Most Tv shows don't support 1080P though so if I set the Wii U to 1080P and my Tv to 720P will the Wii U show 1080P anyway because my Tv apparently supports it?

1081i is more or less 1920x540 lines of resolution and 720p is more or less 1280x720. someone posted a link that goes more into depth but 720p should yield better results for fast moving objects especially those in a video game. if it were me i would simply look at both and choose the one that looks better to me.

Well, according to teh internets, your TV should automatically change to 1080p cause it decides it based on the signal its recieving... And at the worst case senario... You can use the gamepad to change it back to 720p lolll (See people, the gamepad is handy)
