Forums - Sony - How much Sony pays Indies to be free on PS+ and more

$500k isn't that much if they have to split it up among a team of 5-7 people. Its a very large amount but its hard to believe Sony would pay that much to an Indie developer.
Also Computer Science majors hardly ever make $30-40k a month.

There's probably an extra zero there.

The game looks totally ugly, I really hope Sony is NOT paying for this, I dont want it in my PS+ , it can stay on Steam, I dont care.

Ok!

I'll tell them there's a user that thinks it looks ugly and who doesn't want in in his PS+ and it can stay on Steam. I'll tell them he doesn't care.

I'll also tell them to throw away their dreams of making videogames they can actually design themselves and go and work at Ubisoft or EA so they can sit in a building with 300 other people most of whom never ever see the project's scope in its entirety and have zero design input. I'll tell them it's much better to do a soul destroying job if it means that it's AAA. I'm sure they'll listen to you.

What game are you talking about?

How i heard it Sony pays by statistic. They tell you how much your game is expected to sell in the first month if you put it on PSN regularly and that is the amount of money they offer you.

Also i really can't believe Sony is doing the actual porting of the game.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I know there are insiders all over the place, but I've got some info for you guys...

Unfortunately I can't disclose what the game is because my name will be in the credits and I like being anonymous. My friend works at a small Indie studio that's been approached by Sony. *Emphasis* These guys are PC gamers through and through and hold no sentiments towards anyone regarding the console war.

- Sony offered them $500 000 to be free on PS+ for a month. They are going to try and push it up to $700k. They've already made roughly that much through Steam early access.

- Sony has been extremely welcoming and friendly towards them. They are porting it for free. They are paying for exposure. The game will be in Sony's E3 montage this year. (it's only coming out next year though)

- Sony wants it on PS4 and Vita. Once again, these guys are happy because they don't have to do anything at all. Sony's handling everything.

- I asked him about XOne and he said that it doesn't exist to Indies because of the parity clause and MS doing literally nothing to approach anyone. He says a parity clause makes it almost impossible for an Indie studio because they could get sued over small little things that might differ on different platforms and these are extremely difficult and time consuming for Indies.

- They love the Vita. He says it's a real gamer's console. For people that aren't too caught up in AAA and love creative, fun games. Everyone is sad that it's not doing better.

- He showed me an email from a guy at Sony (sorry forgot who it was) that said that there game was the best thing he ever saw! A lot of good vibes in the community.

I hope you find that interesting. It's all true, but I know the internet is full of crazy people so I don't blame you if you think I'm just looking for attention. Keep an eye on next year June's PS+ offerings ;)

You are talking nonsense. Sony isnt gonna decide 13 months in advance what will be June 2015s PS+ offering.

Also 5-700,000 dollars for 1 month PS+? This game you talking about must be graphically intense. Most indie games dont even take 200k to make, their revenues hardly ever reach 1 million dollar. Are you sure you are not trolling?

I'm willing to prove it to one person. I nominate JoeTheBro since everyone knows who is in real life now and he therefore has credibility.

What I can prove to him is that I'm most certainly personal friends with the devs. In that case there is no way to prove the actual amount of money of course. I don't want to get my friends into trouble.

With regards to the underlined. It costs roughly $150k per year to keep the studio running. Keep in mind the incredible risk that the person who owns the studio undertakes. That's literally his entire life's money gone if the game fails. But it hasn't. They've already made up all the dev costs from Steam early access. They've won numerous Indie-dev competitions, and now Sony thinks their game could be a smash hit. They've already been approached to do a movie spin-off based on their game (a really big movie). They are succeeding big time in the Indie scene.

So if you were to assume that the above is factually correct, then $500k isn't very much.

Furthermore, there are a spectrum of different Indie type games. Some Indie games have more man hours put into them than what was considered AAA just 8 or 10 years ago. JoeTheBro's game is a 1 man operation.

But since you say it's such a ridiculous claim, how much do you think Sony offers for a big Indie title to be free on PS+ for a month on launch?

To tell you the truth, I hardly believe it myself.

Can Sony even afford to be giving random indie devs half a million dollars just to port their games over to their systems? If this is true, then it's going to be awfully difficult for Sony to recover from their losses.

- Negotiations

- Contracts

- Setting up a studio to do the port

- Including said game in their promotional videos

You'd be surprised.
