From what we've heard from other devs, they actually do. They offer an amount based on how many times they think the game will be downloaded, not how many times it actually ends up being downloaded.

For the fact that you want to stay anonymous you give an awful lot of clues.
You say you can't tell us the name of the game but then continue to tell us everything we need to get there on our own. Why not tell us? If you can name the game before E3 it will boost your credibility if it actually shows up in a montage.

$500k isn't that much if they have to split it up among a team of 5-7 people. Its a very large amount but its hard to believe Sony would pay that much to an Indie developer.
Also Computer Science majors hardly ever make $30-40k a month.

Guaranteed income can be hard to pass up, regardless of where it comes from. You could put your game on PS Store, Steam and Xbox Live and wait for the money to come in to pay for it's development, or Sony just pay you 500k, paying for development and let extra non-PS+ sales and steam/Xbox Live sales bring in a profit.

Especially if those that do download it, may recommend it.
