Forums - Gaming - Underrated/Overlooked games that became overrated

I'm sure most of us have heard of games that get a ton of praise and are very well known amongst the gaming community, but what about the lesser known games who you hadn't really heard of until recently (recently is being used as a relative term here, as in the game becoming increasing popular after its initial release) that gets absolutely a ton of praise?

Now, I'm not saying these games are bad or anything of the sort, but are there any games that come to mind? For me it would be Final Fantasy 9. It's not a bad game at all, in fact it's a great game, but I do feel it has become overrated by the FF community over time; but as first asked, what do you feel is a underrated game that over time became overrated?

The game you mention doesn't fit into that criteria at all.

And then you go on to say that it's a "great" game. Upon launch it was reviewed as the best FF yet and many still hold to this. Nothing has changed in this regard, so it didn't "become" different.

Persona 4 defines what you're talking about.

Final Fantasy IX is a good shout. It sold the least out of the PS1 FF games but fans seem to praise as if its the second coming. Actually, a lot of Final Fantasy games (VI, IX, X and XII) could probably fit in this as each new iteration leads to mass criticism from old school fans, but five years later you get a whole host of people loving the game and complaining about the following iteration.

Rest assured, this will NOT happen with FF XIII.

Dreamcast games.

By your own logic, FFIX doesn't fall into this category. It sold millions when it released even though it came out when the PS2 was released. And it's rated very highly.

The first game that came to mind was Xenoblade: Chronicles. I've never played it, but I'm sure it really deserves a ton of praise. Even still, best JRPG of the generation? Best JRPG of all time?

Yeah I hear that a lot too, yet to play it. I'm sure it's a great and I'll be getting it eventually but I somehow doubt it is the best JRPG of the generation, or all time. But you never know. Its definitely a bit overrated x.x

Seems to me the only people who claim it is "overrated" are the people who haven't played it. I'm one who does think it's hands down the best jrpg of last gen as it's focus is customization and exploration. The story also being of the Xeno series I can imagine you already know it's epic. It will definitely go down in history with Suikoden II, Chrono Trigger, Lunar The Silver Star, and Final Fantasy VI/VII as a classic.

I guess it's all part of making it in the bid leagues though, you're not there unless people call you overrated, ask FFVII.

Yeah, it's been 4 years and I think we can all still pretty much agree that series was shit, which is why only about a million people out of the initial 7 million stuck around for the end lol.

I'm also going to label the Ys series in this thread. Good series that was overlooked for the longest time by a lot of people, but the way people talk about the series as a whole is like if every game is as good as Oath in Felghana and Ys7 and if those games were 10/10.  I'd rate each game in the series 5/10-9/10 and between.  There's a gap in quality between game to game.

I actually really enjoy Ys 6 and Ys Oath remake. That is because i think the design and gameplay is fast paced and rewarding.

I havent enjoyed Ys7 and Ys Celceta so much. They feel slower paced and more grindy. Still good games, but didnt grab me the way the other two did.

Its actually a thing with most RPG's. They get slower paced and boring the most items that get introduced. Leads to more micro management and basically alot of wasted time.

I think you're probably right

So many fundamental problems.
