6 Japanese PSone Imports Coming West

+ Posted by Antonio Cara on May 12, 2014 // Community Coordinator, GungHo Online Entertainment America

GungHo Online Entertainment America is releasing six more Japanese PSone Classics! These games have never been seen on American shores, but thanks to the magic of the PSN, a whole new audience may now enjoy them.

The games are in Japanese, and depending on their genre, some are definitely more “import-friendly” than others. This post will give you a breakdown of what to expect from each one so we can help you find the import classic that’s right for you!

Sarara’s Little Shop (Danjyon Shoutengai: Densetsu no Ken Hajimemashita)

Take control of a stereotypical RPG item shop and help outfit adventurers to safely traverse treacherous dungeons and snag some fantastic loot.

The experience branches out based on your decisions and there are plenty of big spenders for you to interact with.

As with any RPG/simulation game, it’s pretty text-heavy. Are you prepared for this immersive shop-running classic?

Dragon Beat Legend of Pinball

The ultimate classic pinball experience has arrived! This classic is easily the most import-friendly game on today’s list. Nearly all of the important text is in English, and old-school pinball fun needs no translation.

The game features two unique game modes. One is the “simple” mode that replicates the standard pinball experience, while the other takes players on a steel ball’s epic journey to defeat a dragon and save the lovely princess.

NEO PLANET

If you’ve ever dreamed of flying through space and terraforming a whole new planet to become the second Earth, NEO PLANET is the game for you.

The goal of this intricately detailed simulation game is to carefully balance each planet’s ecosystem while developing it for potential colonization.

It’s incredibly text-heavy, and provides the kind of core challenge that simulation enthusiasts crave. A fair amount of Japanese fluency will be required to enjoy this title.

Heroine Dream 1-2

One of the earliest idol-simulation games, the Heroine Dream series oozes with nineties style and charm. Players are tasked with carefully managing the latest up and coming “heroine” to help her burst onto the scene with style!

Players can enjoy different paths, and based on the decisions they make along the way they can enjoy completely different endings. Can you balance your heroine’s confidence, athleticism, and stress to make sure they’ve got what it takes to rise to the top? This simulation game features a lot of detailed menus and cutscenes, so a fair amount of Japanese knowledge will be required to enjoy these games.

Tokyo 23-Ku Seifuku Wars

In a post-apocalyptic vision of Tokyo, a ban on uniforms has been implemented. With school uniforms banned, naturally a large-scale civil war ensues. Our hero’s goal is to find her friend’s older brother who went missing during the war. Along the way, she is sucked into the conflict and forced to fight to uncover the truth!

This title has players preparing the ultimate squad of student soldiers to send into large scale combat against their rivals. The battles play out like a crazy game of Rock-paper-scissors based on the elemental attributes of their school uniforms. With heavy emphasis on event scenes and simulation elements, players will need to be able to read Japanese well to fully enjoy this game.

We hope you enjoy this eclectic gathering of old-school Japanese fun. Like all our classics, these are priced at $5.99 each.

PlayStation Plus: Skullgirls Encore Free for Members

+ Posted by Kristine Steimer on May 12, 2014 // Sr. Community Specialist

Skullgirls Encore boasts some really unique characters. This fighter’s roster is comprised of mainly females (hence, “Skullgirls” and not “Skullpeople”) and includes really oddball personalities. There’s Cerebella, an orphaned circus performer who happens to have a kick-ass living hat with massive arms, the feline-esque Ms. Fortune who cannot die since she swallowed a Life Gem (making dismemberment part of her playstyle), and Double, an amorphous character that can transform into anything, but usually hangs out in as a nun. The game has a fantastic art style, and the Encore version includes gameplay updates, balance changes and new stages and music.

We’ve got some discounts below for our members as well, including a sale on content for some Free to Play titles like DC Universe Online, Blacklight Retribution and Dust 514.

You can download Skullgirls Encore after the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow, May 13th.

SONY’S CEO, EXECUTIVES TAKING 50% PAY CUT, LOSING BONUSES

369
A sign of solidarity with their struggling company.

Ex-PlayStation chief and current CEO and President of Sony – Kaz Hirai – is preparing to take a 50 percent pay cut while declining his annual bonus, according to The Wall Street Journal. Other unnamed high-level Sony executives will follow suit in a sign of solidarity with their struggling company, which will post an annual loss for the fourth time in five years.

Such a move comes on the heels of bad financial news for the company. Less than two weeks ago, Sony revealed that it expected to post a $1.27 billion loss for the 2013 fiscal year. In February, it forecasted better numbers, predicting a $1.07 billion loss. Either way, such a loss is a far cry from the $489 million profit it expected to turn in 2013.

Sony is taking a financial beating largely due to its PC business, which it intends to spin-off and sell. According to WSJ, Sony is also struggling to gain a profitable foothold with other initiatives, including the niche 4K television market and the revival of its Walkman brand as a digital music player.

Sony’s PlayStation brand is considered one of the company’s primary focuses, and it’s performing well: PlayStation 4 is the best-selling next-gen console. But WSJ notes that, even with PS4’s historic sales and projections of selling 20 million PlayStation devices in the 2014 fiscal year, the PlayStation brand is trending behind where it was six years prior by 45 percent in terms of hardware units sold.

Hirai, who became CEO of Sony in 2012, was a major player in Sony’s PlayStation business beginning in 1995. He became President of the PlayStation division in 2006 and the CEO of Sony’s games and consumer electronic divisions in 2009. His pay cut strategy is similar to that of Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, who also took a 50 percent pay cut, with Nintendo board members taking 20-30 percent pay cuts each.

why isnt there Sony in the poll?

Sony Bend’s Unannounced PS4 Exclusive to Have Inverse Kinematics, Physical Animation, Minigames

by Giuseppe Nelva (25 minutes ago) 0

We know that Oregon-based Sony Bend studio is working on a PS4 exclusive, but Sony has managed, surprisingly, to keep its nature closely under wraps so far, even if we got a few hints from career opportunity ads. Today we get two more, seeking a Senior Animation Programmerand a Senior Game Programmer, that add a few more pieces to this growing puzzle:

__________________

We are looking for an Animation Programmer to help develop next generation animation systems for a current working title being developed by Bend Studio.
This is not an entry level position and applicant must be able to demonstrate current working knowledge in the field of animation development for recent game applications. This role is closely related to both a physics and animation engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Key contributor to the development of state-of-the-art animation systems, influencing improvements to engine architecture, performance optimizations, and supporting production animation staff through improvements to tools and pipelines.
  • Develop robust animation frameworks that will interface with physics and AI character behaviors, such as IK, procedural / physical animation, and facial animations.
  • Maintaining a strong collaborative work relationship with programming peers, animation artists, and design staff.

__________________

We are looking for a senior game programmer to architect and implement game engine code systems that are used for the creation and development of a game application. This will involve writing game code systems for the use of the art and/or design teams for handling the creative aspects of game-play development. Some tools development is occasionally required for handling data needed by the game engine.

Principle Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Is a key contributor to the development of technology, systems and tools that support game design needs. This includes, but is not limited to game logic, character behaviors, state based animations selection, motion systems, scripted mini-games, physics systems, collision systems, rendering, particle effects, entities systems, camera logic, sound support.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the games design to manage communication and enable early identification of issues to ensure issues within direct areas of responsibility are strategically managed.
  • Collaborates with the production team to develop all aspects of the specified game-play experience from a technical perspective.
  • Provides input into the technical design and vision through all phases of the game development cycle from pre-production through final product release. This entails ensuring products are of the highest technical quality and uphold the integrity of the games design.
  • Maintains a clear understanding of personal task lists and project milestones to ensure set goals will be met from a scope, schedule or game-play perspective.
  • Clearly communicating updates and concerns to their manager.
  • Manages requests or information needs regarding any aspect of the technical creation process with the appropriate members of the development team.
  • Actively maintains skill-set and knowledge base by keeping track of the latest innovations from the industry.

The Senior Game Programmer ad mentions scripted mini-games, meaning that Sony Bend’s upcoming game probably will have some, even if we have no way to know what kind of weight they’ll have compared to the whole experience.

The post seeking a Senior Animation Programmer is extremely interesting, and shows that Sony Bend is really pulling all the stops to provide characters with state-of-the-art animation.

We learn that the game will use “IK” animation, which stands for “Inverse Kinematics.” It’s an advanced animation technique that instead of having characters move according to direct input given to the joints, makes them interact with the environment dynamically and naturally, causing limbs to effectively land on certain objects. An example is a character that walks near a railing and keeps his hand on it. We saw the same technique applied in the semi-recent gameplay shown for The Order: 1886. It’s a very relevant method to make characters fit naturally in the environment and increase immersion.

And that’s not all. The ad also mentions Procedural Animation, that basically involves the use of real-time automatically generated animation sequences that allow for a more diverse set of movements. It’s often used for cloth and hair, but also for other parts of a character.

Physical Animation (or Physically Based Animation) is similar, but instead of randomly generating movement, it simulates it based on physical interaction with other objects or the environment, like the wind, or collisions. Physically simulated cloth is a relevant example, and it’s often used in combination with procedural implementations.

It’s worth mentioning that the ad also basically confirms that the game will use Unreal Engine, even if the version is not specified.

According to quite a few recent rumors, we’ll see more of this game at E3. Your guess about what it’ll be is as good as mine, but from what we’ve seen so far it certainly seems to put a lot of focus on its characters.
