Yes, the depth of field adds a lot to the graphics. I especially like it in Bravely Default and Fire Emblem.

It depends on the game, some have terrible 3D. 1st party titles are usually really well done.
Also depends on how I'm positioned, laying down makes it difficult to keep that 'sweet spot', especially for the original 3DS. The XL has a much better 'sweet spot'.

You could try convincing him that the name Nintendo starts with an N and he would probably claim otherwise.
I keep it on for as long as it doesn't bother me or affect the performance of the game. So never at all in Pokemon.
I really like having it on, so I'd guess majority of the time, but I turn it off if in my current session I just can't quite stay in the sweet spot and the flickering gets distracting.
Also off for sure if I'm tired.
