DriveClub Dev Explains Why Game Is ‘Locked’ At 30fps, No Day/Night Cycles, Details FAME System

Paul Rustchynsky, Game Director at Evolution Studios have revealed that DriveClub will run at a ‘locked’ 30 frames per second. Last month’s inFamous Second Son runs at an unlocked 30-60fps but later on Sucker Punch released a patch that allowed players to keep the game locked at 30fps. However, Paul believes that they decided to lock it at 30fps due to consistency issues.

“The most important thing for a racing game is a locked frame-rate – whether it’s 30fps or 60fps. It’s vital that every controller input you make is consistent and also equal for all drivers. We chose a locked frame-rate for this very reason and with 30fps we don’t have to hold back any of the obsessive visual detail in our game,” he said in the comments section of PS Blog.

In another comment, he also confirmed that the game won’t have a dynamic day/night cycle which changes according to the real time on your PlayStation 4. “We tested this because on paper it sounds really cool, but when you actually play at the real time of day for a while you lose a lot of the magic and diversity. We allow you to customise the start time and the time compression (time lapse) in every race you set up, so you have lots of flexibility yourself,” he revealed.

He also detailed the FAME system which is used to level up in the game. “In DRIVECLUB every action you perform, whether that’s drifting in style, reaching insane top speeds or drafting an opponent to set up an overtake, you earn FAME. When you earn enough fame you level up and when you do you unlock new cars to race with! The same goes for you club. When your club reaches specific levels you’ll earn new cars, which everyone in the club gets immediate access to. It’s a simple and focussed approach that allows everyone to help each other to earn more and play more,” he stated.

Finally he also stated that they are looking in to releasing the soundtrack of the game. “We are looking into the options for this, because we love the soundtrack too,” he said.

DriveClub is due this October for the PlayStation 4.

If it was 60 FPS people would have clapped and cheered. It being 30 people say its ok only arcade racer.

In all honesty the game looked ropey as hell from day 1. It looks average and will barely sell well, getting trounced by media. All the extra dev time for what? The devs said it was to make sure they 60 fps. That was obviously bull. The game was never going to be ready for Launch in the slightest.

They never said that.

Also the rest of your comment is so typical for you. It's a freaking racing game how is it supposed to look? If someone slapped the name Forza on this game you'd probably call it amazing but since it is a PS4 exclusive it's of course average and will barely sell. Never change man, never change.

"No Day/Night Cycles"
Wait, what? This alone ruined every Forza 5 thread because it was *the* feature of DC which clearly showed the unrivaled power of PS4 and now this is gone, too? Man, we should dig up the old Forza 5 threads...

Meh, I'm getting the free version anyways so I can't really complain. Also, I don't really care for resolutions or framerates all that much, especially for exclusives.

Oh yes, sure. This sounds reasonable

Really, I don't know if you were registered here when Forza 5 was attacked but it was all about day/night cycle and now this. But as usual there will be close to no backslash for all the people who told us why DC was better...

I always hear people say 60fps in a racer is essential. Interesting to see how this works out.

Simracer, not racer. That kind of games runs at 30, nfs, pgr, horizon, dirt,..and so on. It's pretty ignorant to expect 60fps from a game like Driveclub.

GT/Forza/Pcars will be 60 cause they are sim, and it's elementary for a lot of reasons that we can discuss (wich are not "fluidity"). Otherwise not so much, specially if you have a high quality camera motion blur, you want to stick to 30fps and workout the features. It's very different philosophy compare to a sim game.

I could be wrong about this, but Forza 5 was criticized for having no night racing and weather effects, not about day/night cycle. It is a different thing.

Edit: yep, I was right, it is all over the internet, here is a link to you favorite website as a proof : Link

No, I saw that, but I think the main reason for the attack was, aside from of course just finding flaws for the sake of finding flaws, that you have a set time of day for every track that can't be changed at all. In DC it apparently just doesn't change dynamically according to the real time but you can still set the time to whatever you want ingame.

Yeah they did. At E3 media complained about the framerate ben 30fps. The devs said how the pushed the game back to achieve a better framerate.

The game looked horrible to control and you could bounce around the barriersan actually gain places doing that. There are better games to be waiting on than this PS4 racing game. Infamous is out and NFS TR looks way better than Driveclub. The Order is another game which gameplay  looks terrible.  Theres oher much better tiles on PS4 to be waiting for than Driveclub an The Order.
