Forums - Sony - $349 PS4 (USD)

Even though it is unlikely I think it would help them indirectly announcing a price cut at E3. Not in the sense that people would start wanting it even more but to neutralize the buzz of X1's price cut.

I wouldn't say that there is no need for a price cut. Sony needs to dominate this gen completely so they should fire everything in their arsenal and not even allow their competitors any chance to catch up. It's a big difference between a 2:1 ratio and 1.5:1

Even if you save the $50, there are still no games to play right now. They should focus on more releases as driveclub has been postponed yet again rather than price cutting when there's no real compelling reason to buy the console in the first place.

What? Games are literally releasing every week.

OT: A price drop isn't necessary as long as demand is as high as it is. Even with the silly stigma of having NO GaemZ the system is flying off the shelves.

lol, what games? Indies? C'mon man. Yes a price drop is unnecessary but it honestly seems like right now people are buying membership to a cult rather than buying a console that has games they want to play.

Probably won't happen even if MS dropped their console to $399.99, as PS4s are selling like hotcakes and will continue too, no reason to take a hit profit-wise.

Yes. Indies are games, and people are buying them. Did you actually think that was a clever retort? And maybe you're not aware of this, but people do want to play MLB 14: The Show. People do want to play Watchdogs. And in addition to big games like those, they can play Child of Light and Transistor.

Oh but I guess you're the authority on games that people want to play.

If VGChartz is correct, Xbone is increasing in sales and beating PS4 in America right now. This is disturbing, and I wonder why. At Walmart, I saw 1 Xbone and 3 PS4s on the shelves. Perhaps a price cut is needed to continue crushing Xbox.

VGC's tracking in the US has been a bit sloppy recently, so i wouldn't take their numbers seriously. According to NPD the PS4 has still been outselling the X1 on a monthly basis in the US, despite the release of TF and the X1's timed price cuts/free game bundles.

I do expect the X1 to pull ahead of the PS4 soon enough in the US, but it's still impressive how quickly the PS4 has changed the US from being "xbox land" to pretty evenly split.

Post launch droughts always happen :p If you think about it the only exclusives either the PS4 or X1 have had since launch have been TF on the X1 and inFamous + FF14 on the PS4. If we don't include exclusive like TF and FF14 (since they are both on 2 other platforms), then inFamous is literally the only major exclusive either has gotten since launch ^^;

It happens with the release of pretty much every console unfortunately. Doesn't stop people buying them in their millions.

If those are the games driving demand, you win. I ignored those for a couple reasons: they're either indies or they can be found on other platforms most of the buyers probably already own. Indies are great. I just don't see them as the sort of games that drive demand for new console tech but maybe I'm the one in the wrong.

Price cut will only happen if they start falling behind in sales (even if both consoles are priced the same). As a company, they will try to maximize profit and market share. Why lose money and gain market share when you are making money and gaining market share?

See how fast you clicked that?

WIth the sales of the PS4, its unlikely that we will see this price cut anytime soon, but since it has been discussed to death in consideration of the XB1, why not the PS4?

I think pricecutting the PS4 to 349$ is fiscally possible, although unnecessary.

http://tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/teardown-puts-production-cost-of-sony-playstation-4-at-381-108374.html

IHS' teardown has the system at $372. Although, there are costs associated with shipping the system to retailers and advertising them, certianly at its current price point the system should break even with a year of plus or a 60$ game purchase. Not to mention the price would be a bit cheaper then 372 considering its manufactured in bulked. At $349, 2 games or a year of plus and a game should have the same effect. Not to mention the systems will teleport off the shelves as opposed to flying.

The main 2 problems with this are simply manufacturing and R&D costs. But these problems aren't permanent.

Thoughts?

1. R & D costs are way higher than any one could imagine. Xbox One controller cost $100 million. That teardown $372 doesnt do justice.

2. Sony's financial situation wont let them do it.

3. Price cuts are for those who are struggling. Cutting price down will give a negative mesage. Its will be like killing gold egg layer goose for some quick gains.
