GPU's manufacturers are already using DDR5 ram for years

Nope. In previous gens we have had TONS of third-party titles available in the first few months after launch, most of which were exclusive to that gen. If you did a little research, you would know that. I'll link the list of titles on Wikipedia for some consoles, just sort them by release day and you'll see. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_GameCube_games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_games etc. If you did any research at all before wanting the thread locked, you would see that the Xbox One and PS4 library of games after half a year is pretty paltry compared to previous gens. |
Sorry I couldn't read that since the thread is over.

DDR5 memory has been too cost prohibitive to use more than 2gb in most cards up until two years ago. Even today, most cards only go up to 3gb.

You should never list rumored games when trying to make a point. In any event the gen isn't off to the "slow start" that you make out. There's a nice balance between retail and downloadable games, in a ddition to a few Remasters. |
I only listed the rumored games that are almost certain to come out this year.
In terms of downloadable games, most of those that I've noticed are indies that are already available at places like Steam. Retail is dominated by cross gen games like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty Ghosts, Thief, Tomb Raider, Spider Man 4, etc. In older generations, most newer games were full retail, not ports, remakes, or cross generation.

A ton?? we have Tomb Raider and The Last of Us, with news that we will b getting a mass effect port too, that still doesnt take away that the is also many more games on both the x1 and the ps4, so really 3 remakes from last gen is not a problem and remakes alone is not a problem, last gen did start off the same way in fact imo this gen is already have to a better start. |
I think he means all the PC ports too
@OP: this gen is going great! Haven't turned on my 360 since 2013 while gaining almost 10k gamerscore worth of achievements from Xbox One alone.

I wouldn't call them certain, at least not all of them. Beyond and Halo 2, as of now, have no confirmation of existence, and the few that do are just that, few. As for the DL games, still doesn't negate what I said. This gen, already, has plenty to play (with the typical upcoming drought). The only wonder is interest - who has it, who doesn't. Outside of that, it is hardly an anomaly, especially since we should be including the Wii U. |
I agree with you about the Wii U, it has an excellent catalog, it's just the other two don't seem to be doing quite as strongly in terms of brand new, original, next-gen content. It is changing fast, and I'm sure by the end of the year this gen will be in full steam.

Hardware always comes in hot, always has always will. Even the Wii U that uses older tech came in hot. But the difference is that modern engines are designed to be scalable across different hardware, and easily portable. It's far to expensive to remake everything from scratch these days so they design engine tech to be evolved over time, that is why Naughty Dog are using the same engine that Uncharted 1 uses on the PS4 games just polished up with new tech added in. Even the big new engines like Unreal Engine 4 have been in development for years (Tim Sweeney started on UE4 in 2003 by himself and had a small team on it by 2008 and became available to license in 2012) all tech in games is designed looking towards the future. And the fact that the consoles are mostly using existing PC tech and architectures just makes it easier. Sony especially has made the PS4 much easier to work with, shipping with competent tools and well documented system. Unlike for example the PS3 that shipped with all the technical documentation in Japanese only with buggy tools, and a crazy architecture that no one understood at the time.
The reason that there are fewer games from big publishers on current gen consoles has nothing to do with tech. It is because the industry has changed and there was a serious lack of confidence in the traditional console space. Console software has been on a downward trend for several years with sales being focused on fewer and fewer big titles, plus PC, social and mobile especially in terms of the F2P model were exploding in popularity. and the only indicator for hardware they really had was the Wii U which was slow out the gate. This led to publishers ever bigger focus on to big to fail lowest common denominator tent-pole releases, trying to immitate Activision's wildly successful model. This naturally means few big titles but the ones that are coming are bigger than ever before, and as the budgets get bigger so does the risk of faliure which means a lot of hedging so that means cross gen as publisher couldn't predict that PS4 and XBOne would be off to such a strong start hardware wise when they made the decisions keep in mind games take 2+ years to develop and most of the big ones 3-5 and decisions on platforms are made at least a year out from launch.
So we have a climate where publishers are focusing resources into fewer bigger games in fewer franchises. Too scared to ditch old hardware for fear that the console market could be shrinking. With other new platforms offering lucritive business models with higher ROI steeling more resources. Yea it's not really surprising there is a shortage of big titles for current gen hardware. It's not like the warning signs werent there, tho now that the harwardware is doing well there will probably be a renewed investment in console games.
and if you don't belive me
http://www.worldsfactory.net/2014/01...s-nothing-2015We have talked a lot in the last week about Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the CryEngine powered RPG based on medieval history. It is very likely that we’ll talk a lot more about it in the next couple of years or so (the tentative release date is set for late 2015), but today we intend to inform you about an interesting and yet worrying prospect shared by Creative Director Dan Vàvra: he fears that most publishers have nothing prepared for 2015, because they were just too scared about the next generation and mobile gaming taking over to finance proper projects such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
"Our meeting with the investor took place 13 days before the launch of PS4. What has that got to do with us? A lot, because I had deduced one interesting, almost shocking revelation from our negotiations: one of the main reasons why nobody had signed for our game was the fear, I would say almost horror, of the established big publishers that the new consoles would be a washout, that they weren’t powerful enough and that people today wanted nothing but free-to-play MMOs for iPad. So they were all preparing a few guaranteed mega-titles and waiting to see what happened with regard to everything else, which sent a few studios to the wall and might also result in a big drought for good console games in 2015, because I get the feeling from behind-the-scenes talk and indications that most publishers have nothing prepared for that year, because they didn’t want to plan that far ahead in such an uncertain climate and now they can hardly come up with something epic in less than two years."

Because it's not?
It's the best open to a gen yet for both MS and Sony.
Anyone care to total up the number of games available for each platform within the first two quarters of release?
I won't bother, but I'm guessing the numbers are probably comparable, if not even favorable to the 8th gen due largely to DD titles.
At this point, the argument will regress to "DD titles don't count, only $60 retail games count" which is a matter of subjective opinion.
Failing that, the argument will fall back on "these titles on previous platforms count as a strong line up but these titles don't count on these platforms" which is again, a matter of subjective opinion.
While we're on the topic of subjective opinions, since this seems to me what this thread is really about, the XB360 had no games until Gears of War launched. That's about a year before it had a single game I "had to play." That's me. Prior to that the platform had nothing that made me want to buy an XB360. The PS3 was really just an inexpensive (in relative terms considering first gen BD players were $1,000) BD player with a handful of decent titles. I distinctly remember playing a lot of Resistance and Motorstorm with a bunch of demos of games that weren't worth $60, and a fair amount of PS Store titles for almost 9 months (fall of 2007) before I started seeing titles that started to justify a $600 console. The Wii? I played a ton of Wii Sports just like everyone else. I remember playing some crappy games I actually paid money for but was treated to a Metroid game and a much improved port of a Zelda game. Does that mean that it had the best first year line up? Maybe under a really biased point of view using questionable logic.
With regards to the PS4 and content; I have no complaints. I really like it and already have a back catalog of games to catch up with 5 months in. As a disclaimer, I don't play games 20 hours or more a week, so between retail game purchases, downloads, PSN + titles, I already have enough titles that I really have to pick and choose which ones deserve what gaming hours I do spend each week (Resogun and Infamous received the lion's share).
At this point, I have absolutely no motivation to buy another console other than to play a specific single title when it comes out (nothing yet). So clearly, this is not a "lack of quality content issue." My issue is I have more content to play than I have time.
