Anyone care to total up the number of games available for each platform within the first two quarters of release?
I won't bother, but I'm guessing the numbers are probably comparable, if not even favorable to the 8th gen due largely to DD titles.
At this point, the argument will regress to "DD titles don't count, only $60 retail games count" which is a matter of subjective opinion.
Failing that, the argument will fall back on "these titles on previous platforms count as a strong line up but these titles don't count on these platforms" which is again, a matter of subjective opinion.
While we're on the topic of subjective opinions, since this seems to me what this thread is really about, the XB360 had no games until Gears of War launched. That's about a year before it had a single game I "had to play." That's me. Prior to that the platform had nothing that made me want to buy an XB360. The PS3 was really just an inexpensive (in relative terms considering first gen BD players were $1,000) BD player with a handful of decent titles. I distinctly remember playing a lot of Resistance and Motorstorm with a bunch of demos of games that weren't worth $60, and a fair amount of PS Store titles for almost 9 months (fall of 2007) before I started seeing titles that started to justify a $600 console. The Wii? I played a ton of Wii Sports just like everyone else. I remember playing some crappy games I actually paid money for but was treated to a Metroid game and a much improved port of a Zelda game. Does that mean that it had the best first year line up? Maybe under a really biased point of view using questionable logic.
With regards to the PS4 and content; I have no complaints. I really like it and already have a back catalog of games to catch up with 5 months in. As a disclaimer, I don't play games 20 hours or more a week, so between retail game purchases, downloads, PSN + titles, I already have enough titles that I really have to pick and choose which ones deserve what gaming hours I do spend each week (Resogun and Infamous received the lion's share).
At this point, I have absolutely no motivation to buy another console other than to play a specific single title when it comes out (nothing yet). So clearly, this is not a "lack of quality content issue." My issue is I have more content to play than I have time.
