The biggest issue is they lost the advantage they had last generation. No head start, no price advantage makes it an uphill battle even if things were equal on games.

Sony had outsold the Xbox 360's first year on their first year of the PS3. It was the third party that kept Microsoft ahead of Sony. Microsoft established themselves as the third party console hub and first and second party sold high numbers by association.
I can name 2 more as well...
"PS4 has no gamez" hasnt completely faded yet.
PS+ will be getting AAA games by the end of the year.
I think MS is doing fine and they are bringning games that's what's important. It doesn't matter where exclusives come from... a good game is a good game.

I haven't been to Gamespot in ages. If they write more well thought out articles like the one in the OP, I may start going back. The author is dead on. Especially on his point regarding exclusive content. Given what happened with Mass Effect, I figured MS would have learned it's lesson when it comes to new IPs. Given their financial situation, it's surprising that MS hasn't created or bought more first party studios.

They created a lot of hype and good word of mouth with their GIFs and JPEGs on internet. And then we had E3 and more gifs came up and spreads to 9gag and others mainstream meme sites. People that didn't see E3 or Xbox one reveal already "knew" that PS4 "was better" than Xone. They already "knew" that MS was "evil". There is photos on neogaf of stores like walmart with hand-drawing posters saying: "Did you know Xbox one can play used games?" The Hype train or Sony domination's word of mouth was so big that reached the casual and mainstream people. |
But it was MS fault after all. Until post-E3 they had a product that nobody wanted... after August they faced it and started the 180 changes... today the sales are based in these 180 changes.
MS was humiliated at E3 last year.
Well one of the major reasons I chose xbox was because I assumed the US multiplayer population would be bigger on it. So I certainly agree with the point that people will gravitate to a large player base.

If you said that to me in early January I will agree and say the same... the US Multiplayer Population will be on Xbone but after played a lot of MP games in the last four months I'm changing my mind.
I didn't expect to face so many new users on PS4... a lot of user that I never saw on PS3 before... I even asked for some and they said they didn't have a PS3.
Xbone will be strong with US Multiplayer population but right now this population is sppliting bettween it and PS4... there a lot of new users that come from 360 to PS4.
PS4 demand is so strong not because the PS fan base but because it is catching users from others systems.

those come from ps1/n64 originally
EDIT: while the article looks solid it's nothing more then a rehash of what has been circling the web. and it just comes down to clickbait
