Because I either don't see the tournaments or forget about them.

I certainly need more practice if I want to seriously compete with you, because the only times I played Mario Kart 7 from 2013 onwards was in VGC tournaments. I made plenty of stupid mistakes that wouldn't happen if I played the game more regularly. It's just like playing Mario Kart Wii against Rainbow Yoshi when he was playing the game all the time while I hadn't used bikes in two years.

Well don't worry mate, you make it up by playing in the Mario Kart 8 tournaments we'll soon be having here!
