Forums - Gaming - Why isn't the WiiU part of the next-gen console wars?

It's simple:

The console war have 3 parts:

- The Specs battle - Where people compare the console's hardware and Software performance;
- The Sales battle - Where people compare the hardware and software sales;
- The Library Battle - Where people compare the number of third party,second party and,specially,first party games or exclusive content for each console.

WiiU is way weaker than Xone/PS4 so Specs battle is pointless;

WiiU is selling sub-40k/week right now and the only software that sells well on that machine is the nintendo one, so Sales battle is pointless too;

WiiU lacks of third party support and the second/first party support is lower than it should right now.So unless nintendo announce a lot o things at E3 for hollyday 2014/early 2015,Library battles are pointless too².

You're talking about where Wii U has been -- not where it can go. 2 and 3 could turnaround through Mario Kart 8 alone. If Fire TV takes off, that could make your first point irrelevant. It's arguably already irrelevant given how popular tablet and mobile gaming is. Specs matter to only a small number of buyers. Developers will put games on any platform that it can sell well on.

Where the Wii U can go is nowhere good. After MK8 week, sales might average out to 50-60k a week, but that's it till SSB and the holidays, then it will stabalize to 40-50k a week after that. Mario Kart will not help 3rd parties come back.

Specs DO matter. Why do you think most games on the Wii U are closer to 7th gen then 8th gen? Why do you think most 8th gen games are not on the Wii U? It can't handle it because of it's specs. Sure, there is the small user base, but it's curently 2nd in sales. It's ahead of the One, yet that is getting the same games the PS4 gets, albeit lower quality, but still the same games. Why is that? Because of the specs.

The Wii U's future won't change, and it will never get rid of the stigma it has collected from the hardcore and mainstream markets.

Honestly, it has no stigma from the mainstream market. It's totally unknown to the mainstream market.  Only a minority of the hardcore market has ever had an interest in NIntendo anyway.

Mainstream isn't always equal to what people on this site think and feel. A large number of buyers are families, young couples, people who buy 2 games a year tops, e.g. demographic profiles that are under-represented on this site. Those are the folks to whom Nintendo hasn't completely lost engagement.

The Wii U's future can change. It won't be a runaway success like the original Wii or the DS, but it can achieve N64-like greatness where it doesn't sell as well as it's competitors, but still finds it's foothold in the market.

If the Wii U had comparable or higher specs than PS4/XOne, would it not have the problems it does now?

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

So The Big Bang Theory and South Park did their own versions of the console wars pitting Sony and Microsoft against each other. Though the WiiU was missing from the attractions. Now this is a sign of a bigger problem, that the WiiU isn't seen by many as a next gen console. I personally think it is a next gen console but public perception disagrees with me. Of course what does it matter if the WiiU wasn't on The Big Bang Theory? Who cares? Well it's free advertising. The Big Bang Theory is one of the most popular shows on television nearing 20m viewers an episode. Essentially, Sony and Microsoft just got a free 30 minute advertisement on one of the biggest shows on TV. That's a huge missed opportunity for Nintendo. Nintendo needs to make themselves seen as a direct competitor to Sony and Microsoft or else the public will never take them seriously.

I own a Wii U and I do not consider it truly "next gen" it falls somewhere between a PS3 and PS4 just like a Wii fell somewhere between a PS2 and a PS3

Well it comes down to games. Nintendo have about 5-6 games a year coming out for their consoles so no one thinks of them as serious competitors because their not.
Sony/Microsoft will eventually be launching 3 games a month at least like they're doing with Ps3/360 so yeah it's very easy to have Nintendo ignored when all they have are 5 games to be excited for.

PSn - greencactaur
Nintendo Switch FC - SW - 5152 - 6393 - 5140 Please feel free to add me :)

It is part of next-gen.

You cant assume a comedy show is representative of anything else than comedy. Putting Nintendo there wouldnt be comical. They want to make Sheldon look like a geek. And theres a huge battle between PS4 and X1 since they released almost simultaniously.

You would realise they have played on the Wii on past episodes. The Wii U just wasnt relevant for the plot.

Why do people keep asking this stupid questions? :S What do you think?

The simple reason is because in most people's view the XBone's fate as far as being the winner or loser this gen for sales/importance is not written in stone (particularly if your focus is solely on the NA market) while the wiiU's is.

The counterpoint to my argument is that last generation there were console war debates that still ignored Nintendo, but I'm unsure if these kind of things showed up in other media to the degree we're talking about now so I don't think it's directly comparable.

This Gen's ignoring of Nintendo is a combination of what happened last gen and its poor sales performance exacerbating the problem.

Last Gen, the "console war" was fighting for second place, since the Wii was irreperably in the lead, any criticisms toward it couldn't hold water despite being true because the facts don't matter when we are talking about popularity.

When the Wii U came in by itself, it failed to make the impact of a new generation, so by the time of the PS4 and X1 release, the Wii U was already under the radar, not to mention its "competition" with the last gen consoles. It completely wasted its lead.

The WiiU isnt going to be to many peoples main system, for example i have the optiont o buy Watchdogs on my ps4 or WiiU well ill tell you this i wont get it for the Wiiu, its not that the WiiU is a bad system its just i like the ps4 more for mainstream titles, i bought the WiiU for Nintendos games and thats all ill own on it.  Thats the perception problem Nintendo has right now.  Until they decided to try and compete on the same field as Sony and MS or do something better then them they wont ever be considered a main system for core gamers, and its obvious that the casuals havent bought into the WiiU like they did the Wii.  Nintendo needs to try and make a system as powerful as sony and MS system, and they need to have the 3rd party support for that system.  right now they just dont have either of those things.  with that said I LOVE PIKMIN 3  i dislike NSMBu  3dworld is fun as hell though.

Generations are not about power, they are about time.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Because Nintendo has made themselves irrelevant.

However, I'd like to point out that the show has shown them all playing Wii (sports, MKWii, etc) multiple times as as soon as MK8 or some other game launches, likely they'll be playing that too.
