It doesn't seem to limit the sales of the other 2 consoles. It's quite interesting to criticize the business practices of the successful products from the standpoint of the losing product. If Nintendo would introduce a System like PS+ where I could get new games every month for almost free it would get me to buy the WiiU even faster. But Nintendo is just too cool for mainstream. |
Sony only gives us games because otherwise it would be deemed unacceptable and there would of been much anger from people playing PS3. It's almost like bribery, except they've become very generous with it and of course I would except 5 games a month for free. Microsoft only pulled it off because Xbox Live had a subscription from launch of Xbox 360. The fact online is free on Wii U is a benefit for it but the libraries for the other two will be inevitably stronger down the line, which matter far more.
You can't say micro-transactions are the same, I doubt they affect the console sales, maybe individual games though. That is pure robbery anyway.
Yeah I would like free games from Nintendo every month too but they won't put their own franchises on it and that's basically all they have on Wii U right now (3rd party except indies have almost dried up). I except PS+ but micro-transactions aren't a good thing, no matter how you look at it.
Micro-transactions are a terrible excuse to shake more money out of us, especially if games become built around them like a lot of mobile games, that would be worrying for the future of the industry in general if they did that
Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

It's a big problem for Nintendo to be seen as irrelevent in the console space by the mainstream market, they really have fallen from the grace of the mainstream casual audience that coveted them during the wii era. Also no remembers the south park episode when cartmen froze himself for a wii, Nintendo was huge in the mainstream at that time idk were all this "they don't compete in the mainstream with ms and sony" bullshit is coming from lol.

Nintendo is in a league of their own, way beyond Sony and Microsoft.
It's simple:
The console war have 3 parts:
- The Specs battle - Where people compare the console's hardware and Software performance;
- The Sales battle - Where people compare the hardware and software sales;
- The Library Battle - Where people compare the number of third party,second party and,specially,first party games or exclusive content for each console.
WiiU is way weaker than Xone/PS4 so Specs battle is pointless;
WiiU is selling sub-40k/week right now and the only software that sells well on that machine is the nintendo one, so Sales battle is pointless too;
WiiU lacks of third party support and the second/first party support is lower than it should right now.So unless nintendo announce a lot of things at E3 for hollyday 2014/early 2015,Library battles are pointless too².

no. the first steps in public awareness are to put out a kickass game and advertise the hell out of it with the platform.
for months, ms and sony heavily marketed and pushed preorders for their systems on a scale nintendo has yet to match for anything they have done.
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
That's sad, Sheldon used to like Nintendo the most.
Same with South Park, it had it's own Wii episode.
The Wii U doesn't get much media attention. It was at the Ellen show, but that isn't a good audience for gaming. I also saw the Wii U for a few seconds at The Simpsons as "Funtendo Zii Zu".
And Nintendo doesn't market it properly.

Wait, wait, wait!
Just because TBBT did not showed the console it is not part of the race?
First of all, fuck TBBT, it is not even that funny.
Second, it is just because they launch together.
Same goes for South Park, which is very funny, but they used the 2 consoles because they launched together.
Even if you disagree with it I think there is a common perception now that the wii u like the earlier wii is a generation behind in technology and performance. It's generation is not important, its performance level is. Despite how nice Mario kart looks the wii has a huge number of games that are inferior to ps3 and 360 versions of the same games.
I've been a wii u owner from launch and can directly compare to 360 and PS3 and to me the older consoles have a greater range of technically more impressive games. That may change of course.
Wasn't this also the case with the original wii anyway. Despite the wii's success it didn't get the games that ps3 and 360 got most of the time and when it did they were rubbish because of the weakness of the hardware. The wii only really sold on its exclusive games. Can you imagine going into a shop owning 360, PS3 and wii and saying 'I want to purchase call of duty for wii instead of 360 or PS3? So the wii was the winner in hardware sales but was actually not very important for big budget multiformat titles despite its success. The wii u is a flop and has weak hardware so is even less important this generation.

You're talking about where Wii U has been -- not where it can go. 2 and 3 could turnaround through Mario Kart 8 alone. If Fire TV takes off, that could make your first point irrelevant. It's arguably already irrelevant given how popular tablet and mobile gaming is. Specs matter to only a small number of buyers. Developers will put games on any platform that it can sell well on.
