Well. I thought games were already on a downward spiral since the Playstation 3/Xbox 360 arrived, publishers and developers simply do not take any risks even with relatively smaller budgets.

Long gone are the days where developers would attempt something truly unique and different and attempted to create new genre's.
Games like Sacrifice where it blended 3rd person and real-time strategy, which was an amazing game, it was "original and fresh" upon it's release, the only experience I have had that blew me away in terms of originality like that game was Minecraft and Sanctum, both aren't AAA games or even AA.

Now games are just full of "press A to win", cut-scenes that take away control from the gamer when it could have been far more interactive. (Uncharted, The Last of Us, Halo, Gears etc' being culprits.)

Actually, The Last of Us has no QTEs and is 16 hours of pure gameplay (+1.5 hour of cutscene) which is about 2 times longer than your typicall AAA action adventure game.

But if you wanna hit the pinnacle of interactivity, check out some PC point and click games where you click on a location and watch as your character excitingly walks towards it !!  Or how about some awesome PC MMOs like LoL and DOTA where you spend 90% of your time browsing your menus and invenotry and clicking on icons, thats some immersing stuff right there ^^

I have The Last of Us on the PS3.
Hold Triangle to pull chain, press button to pick up plank, hold to strangle, etc. It’s an endless series of actions and Quick-Time-Events which makes me feel like a spectator.

If you want interactivity, play StarCraft, always on the move, managing, building.
Civilization IV, is stupidly indepth.
Heroes of Might and Magic can take hours for a single match, full of exploration and customisation.
Star Citizen also needs no introduction.

Sins of a Solar empire is another noteworthy mention.

I can endlessly list PC exclusives, where you're actually *part* of the experience and not merely just a spectator along for the ride or staring at menu's like what you sarcastically describe.

That doesn't make The Last of Us a bad game, I just prefer something that makes my axons to secrete neurotransmitters more often.

Thankfully, the light at the end of the tunnel arrived for the PC awhile ago as gamers are no longer at the mercy of multi-billion dollar publishers who wish to pad their pockets with $100 bills, PC gamers are funding new games that *they* wish to play like Star Citizen and Planetary Annihilation instead of being force-fed the same yearly rehashes of old franchises with little innovation.

/rant of an angry gamer.

That's why many, including me, think that last gen was the worst gen for games ever. The big franchises will be here for as long it makes money. Are you obligated to buy it ? No ! So you aren't being force-feded with them. It's not like they are poiting a gun to you to buy their game. Just buy/support the games you like.

I think big publishers already got the message, we will start seeing more diversity coming from them. Look at Child of Light from Ubisoft, one example.

Note: Last time I checked all gamers play the games they wish to play. Not PCgamers only  xD

Games like FIFA or Madden, I have no complaints about, who could? They've been the same for generations, they always sell. The only difference now is that they have online play, which they have to fund.

Modern gaming is a joke though. PS2 era you had a game, it was finished, you got all content in the game you purchased. That was the end of it. Now? We have a 'full' game, this game is made in the knowledge that they could then release extra content down the line which you can then pay for, before the game is even out. Extra characters cost money, extra maps cost money. Sure, maybe there is a system where you can play the game and achieve things instead or you can just buy credits and cheat your way to the top. They can release half finished games and just do updates until it's fixed (makes me wonder why anyone would buy a first day release). None of this is good practice.

Modern gaming is about getting as much from us as possible and making sure we know it. Sadly people give into this and buy anyway making game companies think it's a good idea.

The only game I've seen which seemingly isn't like this is Tekken Tag 2, sure there was preorder bonuses but after 4 months all characters were available to all users (via an update mind you) and even then they released more for free. Now it does have extra content to buy but pointless stuff like music and videos which don't change the gaming experience.... even my example has bad points. Sad.

Hmm, pie.

It's been happening for over 10 years. If we are killing it then it's a very slow death

We survived the generic platformer and beat-em-up generations without gaming dying. I don't see the difference now.

Maybe people buy things because they like them. I hate this criticism stuff just because you dont like them. It doesnt work that way. Just because you dont like sports games or fps games doesnt meant they arent good, just means they arent for you. The same could be said about any genre really.

I would strongly disagree.

Also the more people EA get to purchase these consoles the more people that are available to buy these other games. If not for all these sports games sales of the other games you like would be lower.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Well the last of us reached 6 million units a few weeks ago, it is pretty good for a new ip.
