I think guy from Ubi referred to them as "new-gen" and "old-gen". I think it much better explains situation and avoids confusion than usual "next-gen" moniker.

Current gen is the most recent gen. The ps3 was a last gen console the second the ps4 came out.
I have moved on the moment the Ouya came out.

8th gen is next gen until the majority of releases for 7th gen dry up (this has happened for PSP, DS and Wii but not Xbox 360 and PS3 yet). There's still games that came out this year which didn't come for 8th gen systems at all. South Park is a major example so far while alot of major releases are and will be cross gen. When more next gen only titles like AC Unity and Batman Arkham Knight come out then we can call it current gen but for the time being we are in the transition period. I would say this time next year, the 8th gen will be current gen.

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030
The 8th gen was the current gen when the 3DS launched. Continuing to call it next-gen builds up more hype for games and products. People get more excited about new stuff. Hype = money money money.
