You can call them every name in the book ... the fact is that audience is simply more reliable and has the disposal income and free time to play a lot of games.

Games will never be movies, people just need to accept that and move on, movies are their own distinct entertainment medium. Sometimes I just want a story told to me in 2 hours, not something that requires 20 hour time commitment that involves me running around "area X/Y/Z" trying to find "magical key/item Z/X/Y".  By their structure alone these are not even remotely similar entertainment mediums (even those "cinematic" games).

That audience is reliable as long as you aren't Nintendo, because it thrives on putting Nintendo down. Everything Sony, Microsoft or a third party does becomes better the moment there is some negativity directed at Nintendo.

Well the last time Nintendo did something really relevant for this crowd in a huge way was probably GoldenEye ... like 17 years ago now (lol), so Nintendo really hasn't earned the right to have any credibility with this audience.

That said, they are the console business now, especially now that Japan is virtually a dead market for consoles. So I mean I don't know what Nintendo's choices are here, do they even want to make consoles anymore? I get the feeling there probably won't be another Nintendo home console in the traditional sense, it'll just be their future handheld chip in a box (like what the Vita TV is) released for the token audience that just needs to play their Nintendo games on a TV.

you know he was going to turn it into some anti Ninty conspiracy. LOL Whatever he says, its clear that the gamers are picking Sony MS over Ninty and that must have been a LOT of manchildren picking up PS2s

GBA did not cannibalise GCN the way 3DS is cannibalizing the Wii U, because their libraries weren't as similar. GCN's main problem was its butchering of Nintendo's franchises instead of taking the next logical step from their 64 iterations.

I haven't been in the best condition in the last few days, so it hasn't dawned on me before today: All you guys who disagree with me share the belief that the Nintendo hardcore console comes down to flawed execution. I mean, just look at your latest reply to me. "...taking the next logical step from their 64 iterations.", what good would that have done? The Nintendo 64 was a failure.

N64 was a modest success, not a failure. And it was handicapped by cartridges, which not only limited support but were a lot more expensive than CDs, and being late to the party.

A big part of PS2's success can be attributed to:

(A) Being a very cheap DVD player at the time when the format exploded.

(B) Its casual appeal.

The PS2 had a ton of hype behind it too. I remember some people toying with the idea of buying a Dreamcast, but wanting to wait because they heard the PS2 "was going to be killer". I remember my Mathematics prof in university talking about getting one, I remember my dentist also mentioning how it was going to be impossible to find one, Toy Story graphics (lol), supercomputer processing, etc. etc. etc.

Plus it had Madden exclusivity from day 1 ... which was huuuuuuuuge and then Sony just destroyed Nintendo/MS by getting exclusivity over GTA3, DMC, Final Fantasy X, and MGS2 for its second holiday.

No one else really had a chance.

Wii wasn't a miracle, it was a conscious and brilliant insight into the market; insight they completely failed to exercise with Wii U.

Wii U is the antithesis of the Wii; the Wii's success was due to its recognition of a changing market, Wii U's failure is due to its lack of recognition of a changing market.

The whole point of the Wii was: do something that hasn't been done before, break new ground. The Wii U is just "try the same strategy that worked last time."

I do agree however that Nintendo is cannibalizing Wii U.

Plus the two year head start over GCN/Xbox. By the time they arrived, PS2 was already charging at full steam.

You can call it fluke, miracle, luck, whatever. The numbers are there and wii u is struggling to even surpass Gamecube.
