Forums - Sony - Michael Pachter: Morpheus a “Really Bad Idea for Sony,” but PS4 Will Be a “Wild Success”

Agree?

Yes 63 33.69%

No 25 13.37%

Morpheus will be successful 83 44.39%

PS4 will not be successful 16 8.56%

Total:187

one thing to keep in mind is:

if facebook or samsung/apple release a new version of their VR device every single year, everyone would be fine with that.
when sony releases their VR device, that's it. no major changes for the next 5 years.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

Supose you are a mariedge with children, you want your familie to enjoy top tier enteirtaiment gizmos...

So, you already have a PC, 2 tablets, 3 smartphones, 1 very big TV and 2 smaller ones, 1 or 2 game consoles.

Why on earth would you buy 3 or 4 Oculus to your family enjoy a few games and shows that support it?

It would be a gigantic mistake if they didn't release Morpheus on PC. There is a ton of potential in it. If I was Sony, I wouldn't be limiting an amazing piece of technology to just the PS4.

Unless they will have a hefty profit per unit, what is there in it for Sony to release it for PC?

Firstly, let's not forget that Sony does make PC games also. But to answer your question, I belive that the casual audience Sony should be aiming for doesn't own a gaming console. It also wouldn't hurt to release the headset onto as many platforms as possible, that includes support for television as well.  Other companies will start popping up and Sony has a chance to lead the market.

I've said it so many times that I have to add it as a sig: VR isn't just about games.

I think it’s a bad idea for multiple participants to chase it, and I think it’s a really bad idea for Sony. I have no problem with the Oculus Rift, that they’re trying it, because they’re a startup and that’s a very small market and if they dominate it that’s great, but if it’s a small market and there are multiple players, it’s gonna be hard for anybody to make money.

And I don’t think it’s gonna be a big market. It sounds interesting, but I don’t think there will be enough content to justify making the capital investment to create the headset. I think it’s chicken and egg. If there’s no content you’re not gonna buy a virtual reality headset, and if you don’t buy a virtual reality headset, there won’t be any content, because no one will make a dedicated game for a very small audience.

The Oculus Rift guys are making some games themselves, and they hired some pretty impressive people. Sony certainly is capable of doing the same, and if you wanna think about Sony’s success here, remember all the big 3D games and how those did. Nobody cares. So I think it’s just a super super small market.

so he is directly contradicting his statement that bundeling kinect is a bad idea with that right there

Everything doesn't always have to be about making money. What about just creating free products for consumers to enjoy? I certainly would.

There's nothing wrong with inferring.

A few things to consider when inferring a price though.

1.)  This product is a long ways from releasing, some parts of it will very likely get much cheaper.

2.) If a 300$ price point is a bad idea, then why would Sony do it?

2a.)  Sony has been making a lot of good moves lately for the most part, why would they mess up something so critical as price of a new "platform?"

2b.)  Assisting on a price suggests that they aren't going to keep it around.  I'm suspecting that they'll keep it around, make new updates, etc.  It'll become cheaper in the long run.  No reason it can't be a success, if Sony makes the right decisions.

...because they think it is a good idea? Are you seriously asking why Sony, a failing company, might be prone to making a bad business decision? Sony has also been making a lot of bad disisions recently as well, like the Vita TV and overpricing the Vita's memory, and the Vita as an entity. Nintendo was making a lot of good moves too. Then the Wii U came out. It doesn't matter how many years off it is. This is a new technology with expensive hardware. And this is Sony we're talking about. The PS Move is currently $70. The Eye is $100. The Vita is $200 after numerous price cuts. Do you really think that Sony will be able to sell a new product like this with technology that costs at least as much as the Vita to produce at an "affordable" price and turn a profit? Get real. They aren't a charity.

I don't understand why VR is a thing now, it's so gimmicky like the Kinect; okay to have at first but wasn't worth it in the long run.

So according to Pachter, Morpheus will succeed and the PS4 will fall flat on its face in the long run.

JINX!!!! XD

I think people are missing the point with VR.

This whole VR thing isn't even new. They've been trying to push VR to mainstream consumers for years (it has to be a hit with that demographic to be viable in the long run). For ages they've been trying to break into that crowd and it hasn't worked. Not just because of the obvious technological limitations, but mainly because of how you have to use a bulky thing on your head and face. VR is still impractical. That hasn't changed.

See, not everyone is a techie/geek/core gamer who is willing to wear something like that inside the house or even outside of it. But unless Sony or FB can make it cool, no one is willingly going to wear that thing on their faces.

Again, the key to make VR successful is for it to become a FAD. Only then will mainstream consumers adopt something, regardless of how goofy it may be.

That's how Motion Controls were even a thing during all those years when every core gamer was trying to minimize its impact. And yet only one console has been so popular to have been featured at THE OSCARS. And it got that big thanks to mainstream consumers.

If Sony and FB can tap that market, they're going to kill it and sell a ton of them. If not, then it'll become the latest VIRTUAL BOY.

Agreed. If 3D TV, 3D Streaming, 3D Blu-ray, and 3D games haven't caught on -- it's logical assume decreasing the usability of 3D via a headset won't do any favors for VR.

For total immersion, you'd also have to provide echolation in the sound too.

Developing titles that really use VR well are gonna be a huge mess.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
